European Championships preview

Spencer’s predictions:

The 32nd European Gymnastics Championship, sponsored by Surgery, has arrived …

Despite Russia’s requisite team selection drama and the surprising omissions of Komova and Ilyankova, Russia‘s team of Melnikova, Simakova, Perebinosova, Akhaimova, and Alexeeva will nonetheless enter the competition as the favorite to win team gold with the highest scoring potential of the bunch. …

But, watch out for France. France’s team of De Jesus Dos Santos, Boyer, Bossu, Charpy, and Devillard stands out for being an actual full-strength, first-choice squad among an entire continent of injuries. …

1. RUSSIA
2. FRANCE
3. UKRAINE
4. GREAT BRITAIN
5. NETHERLANDS
6. GERMANY
7. BELGIUM
8. ITALY

Romania has never failed to make the team final at a European Championship. Ever. That streak is in jeopardy this year but not a lost cause quite yet. …

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW

As Spencer posted that prediction he was in denial that Becky Downie would withdraw due to injury. She did. ☹️

It’s 3-up, 3-count so consistency may end up being more important than potential team score. The top 8 teams from today’s competition qualify to the team final.

Italy favourite to win Jr Team

My prediction.

I watched 3 of 4 Junior podium sessions yesterday. Most of the top gymnasts.

No question Italy was the highlight. These young ladies have what it takes. Power. Difficulty. Toughness.

They’ll certainly have the highest D-score as a team. Three DTYs, for example.

The biggest surprise of the day for me was Ireland. That team has come very far in the past few years. They look very well coached. #respect

Romania unsurprisingly has strong tumbling & vault. I’ve never understood how they so consistently train such amazing power athletes. Decade after decade. Romanian legs. . Bars is still weakest and least consistent, but they look to be moving in the right direction in so far as routine construction goes.

Russia, Germany, GB and other have some excellent routines. Ksenia Klimenko RUS is amazing on Bars, for example.

But most of these Juniors are competing too much difficulty. There will be many misses under pressure. Many would score higher going for safer, cleaner sets.

Team Russia at Europeans

Rewriting Russian Gymnastics on Facebook is doing a great job covering their teams.

Here are a few of the Glasgow photos shared.

Head Coach Evgeny Grebyonkin with Angelina Melnikova

Artem Voinov is the team’s vault coach.

Dmitri Guseev, national tumbling coach, with Lilia Akhaimova

Larissa Ushakova, beam coach

Irina Alexeeva (American in a good way)

And of course … Andrei.

NCAA Gymnastics at University of Houston?

“Lindenwood was just a dream, and then it became a reality,” (Randy) Lane said of the Missouri university adding gymnastics at the Division II level for the 2013 season. …

It does seem crazy that Texas has no Division 1 NCAA Gymnastics team.

KJ Kindler, DD Breaux, Mary Lou Retton, Kim Zmeskal-Burdette, Nastia Liukin, Madison Kocian and Simone Biles have voiced support for a new NCAA team.

Lisa Bowerman, head coach at Texas Woman’s University, has perhaps a better perspective on the status of NCAA gymnastics in the state than anyone.

“Texas is a state with a lot of pride, and people want to stay here. Given that opportunity, a lot of them would stay here rather than accept an opportunity out of state,” she said. …

Becky Downie withdraws from Europeans

How sad. Becky injured her ankle on Beam dismount during podium training.

She’ll be replaced by Taeja James.

Many have commented on the NUMBER of athletes who have withdrawn from this meet due to injury. I’m not sure it’s more than usual. WAG is a very dangerous sport.

Here’s what the home fans will be missing. Becky’s Bars were great in training.
