Ski Jumping Judging Bias

Ski jumping competitions involve subjective evaluations by judges from different countries.

This may lead to nationalistic bias, according to which judges assign higher scores to their compatriots.

To test this claim empirically, we exploit within-performance variation of scores from all World Cup, World Championship, and Olympic Games competitions between the 2010/11 and 2016/17 seasons. (15,000 jumps)

Our findings confirm that judges assign significantly higher scores to their compatriots. The magnitude of this nationalistic bias is significantly higher in more corrupt countries.

We do not find that judges assign significantly different scores to jumpers whose compatriots are present on the judging panel. …

good news for Gymnastics in the USA

More than half of the 18 women invited to Olympic trials in St. Louis last month (2021) were women of color.

While numbers are still low on college teams, there is progress. Black womenΒ account for nearly 10% of the scholarship athletesΒ at the NCAA Division I level, an increase from 7% in 2012.

Personally, I criticize the IOC for being gutless β€” taking no stance on the lack of human rights in totalitarian dictatorship China.

At the same time, I praise the athletes and coaches β€”Β including those from China and ROC.

Former Australian National Coach Perry Liddick was required to to apologise to double Olympian Georgia Bonora.

In a VERY short letter she acknowledged her behaviour was unacceptable and the language she used towards Bonora was belittling, offensive and humiliating.

When contacted by The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, Liddick said β€œvaluable lessons had been learned all around” and it was time to move on.
