Simone and social media

Many Olympians in Rio had problems with social media. It seemed they’d not had training in how to manage stalkers, hecklers, etc.

It did go well for Simone Biles.

You don’t have to engage with those who try to bring you down.

When commentator Al Trautwig tweeted that Simone’s parents are not her parents (apparently because he doesn’t understand the concept of adoption…or much about gymnastics but I digress…).  Her response was a perfect eight words:

β€œMy parents are my parents and that’s it.”

When called the β€œnext Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt,” her response was a simple β€œI’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles.” …

That comes from an excellent post – A DOZEN LIFE LESSONS TO LEARN FROM SIMONE BILES

Olympians should stay off social media

During the Olympic Games.

They should have people filtering communications from the media and general public. I heard of many who were distracted. Including Cata Ponor.

Bea Gheorghisor posted an exhaustive review of the social media issues.

Fact is that Cata’s comeback for Rio was fantastic. It’s clear she was the best choice for Romanian Olympian.

UPDATE – On Gymternet Clan I read that Cata Ponor has deleted her official Instagram and Twitter accounts. Should you see any accounts that are posing as her … they are fake accounts.

I quite enjoyed episode #206 of the audiocast from last week. It’s always entertaining when Spencer from The Balance Beam Situation is on the show.

UPDATE – Elspeth Reeve was interviewed on NPR’s All Things ConsideredIrked By Broadcast Coverage, Gymnastics Sites Aim To Raise The Bar

Worth a listen.

When Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney decided to announce her retirement from gymnastics in February, she didn’t talk to the Today show, or ESPN, or The New York Times. She picked GymCastic, a weekly podcast run by a 41-year-old law librarian in Orange County named Jessica O’Beirne.

… One of the most popular sites, The Gymternet, is run by Lauren Hopkins, a 30-year-old fan who works in marketing at a New York law firm. Barely two years old, the site breaks news and provides injury reports, live blogs and analysis of competitions, interviews with elite gymnasts, and critiques of leotard fashion. …

How hard-core gymnastics fans are revolutionizing the way the sport is covered.

Lauren is a regular guest on GymCastic, of course. πŸ™‚

Louis Smith reprimanded for social media

British Gymnastics: issued a reprimand that will remain on Louis’ record for two years. A good decision, I think.

He’s still eligible to try for Rio.
