worst Olympic Gymnastics story (so far)

The Olympic year always results in hilariously inaccurate cut-and-paste news reports from general sports media. The worst I’ve seen was written by Devin Neal on an Indian site:

… Currently, Dipa is known to be a phenomenon in the vault event that requires an athlete to sprint towards an apparatus and acrobatically jump over it, do multiple somersaults and execute a ideal landing.

She will be chosen following the selection trial at the Australian Gymnastics Championships, to be held at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena on May 23. …

… she’ll be the first gymnast to represent Jamaica at the Olympics.

Here’s the PDF version in case that gets taken down.

NOW Dipa has to survive intense media scrutiny until the Olympics. Best would be to leave India and train somewhere where she could focus.

Dipa

In 2004 I recall Kyle Shewfelt hiding out from the Canadian media. Limiting training distractions. 🙂

  1. Rick, I respectfully (and strongly) disagree with your suggestion that it would be in Dipa’s best interest to train outside India prior to Rio. Yes, there will be (is) extreme media scrutiny, but
“you ride the horse that got you there”, and this young woman and her life-long personal coach
BS Nandi have accomplished what they have to date within India.
It’s extremely important for countries in which the sport is developing to understand and act on the principle that the grass isn’t always greener. Indian gymnastics has significant political problems, but the infrastructure, especially the quality of coaches and gymnasts is THERE!
For India to be a world power in the sport (which they can and should be!), they don’t need camps in foreign countries……the coaches and gymnasts just need for administrators to support them in a rational and substantive way……Dipa has thrived to date in India…no need to change now.

    1. Heard loud and clear, Jim. I hope it works for her.

She’ll have media request DAILY. Somebody will have to protect her training privacy. And good luck with that in India.

  2. Have you ever seen her attempt a split leap? The “quality” is clearly NOT there. Of course we already knew that, as her exploitative “coaches” have been letting her attempt a Prod for years now, with no basic technique that would allow her to do anything but land it with her head between her knees.

    1. I’m pretty sure that is a computer generated article and not real news. Probably just there to get google traffic.

    2. Mr.Balabanov11,
we had an exchange about 2 years ago on the subject of Dipa’s vault…..I agree with you completely that her vault should be heavily penalized, if not voided, and I have long (a very long time) been concerned about her safety…..
      all that said,
      1. Mr. BS Nandi, her “exploitative” coach has managed to keep her from significant injury (so far at least of course) and although I continue to have reservations has SUCCESSFULLY taken advantage of the “rules” as they currently exist

      2. the issue of being able to attain an 8+ e-score on Dipa’s vault (I believe we are in complete agreement) is an indictment of everything that’s wrong with the current state of the sport.

      3. Dipa is an incredible athlete and an amazing woman. I am thrilled that she has accomplished what she has to date, and everyone who cares about gymnastics should be rooting for this wonderful young lady from Tripura!

      1. I’ve been following Dipa for years. She’s continually improved.

Floor and Beam are quite strong. And even Bars is not bad in 2016, despite not wearing grips.

They are certainly doing something right.
