Around 1992, something happened to cause the fortunes of men’s and women’s teams to diverge. The decline of the women’s was slowed (but not halted) and that of the men accelerated. What happened? …

Josh Overton to Georgia
Josh Overton, a 19-year coaching veteran most recently overseeing the women’s team at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in Iowa, has been named an assistant for the Georgia Gym Dogs, according to an announcement Wednesday by Coach Courtney Kupets Carter. …
With Charlie Tamayo and volunteer Suzanne Yoculan Leebern, I think the team is in great shape for next season.
Some are a little worried:
… the Gym Dogs’ entire paid coaching staff has a combined 1 year of college coaching experience, and exactly 0 (zero, zip, nil) years of women’s college coaching experience. …

“This is the best feeling ever, no words can describe how I feel right now,” Clay said in a release. “I wasn’t expecting to come first, I was just aiming for the podium but everything just came together today. I was in the zone and focused on what I had to do to win and am happy with the results.”
Clay was 1st on Pommels with 5.80 / 14.650.
For Worlds Canada will most likely name one or two AA gymnasts as well as the top contenders to qualify for an apparatus final.
Chinese gymnast Xuon (James) Luo representing B.C. was first on Rings 6.10 / 14.500.
Olympian Scott Morgan, back from injury, was 4th on Floor, 2nd on Vault.
Kevin Lytwyn, back from surgery, won H Bar with 5.90 / 13.850. He’s training a much bigger routine, however.
All in all it was a thrilling competition with 42 seniors. I have to say it was more entertaining than the FIG women’s meet running concurrently. 🙂
Of the many NCAA gymnasts, past and present, the guy who hit best was Iowa’s Cory Paterson.
Charlie Tamayo to Georgia
“I am very excited to have Charlie join the Georgia Gymnastics’ coaching staff,” said Kupets Carter. “Not only does he bring a wealth of knowledge but he has a contagious energy that makes for a great atmosphere in the gym. His positive attitude and steadfast determination is exactly what this program needs. I cannot wait for the Gym Dog community to get to know him.”
Tamayo helped Navy (Men) finish 11th nationally in 2017, the best finish in the program’s history. …
Great hire. Charlie is one of the most natural coaches I’ve every worked with. And he knows a LOT of people from his years at Woodward West. Everyone knows Charlie from his astonishing feats on YouTube.
