Team USA:
Penny said his federation does not chart participation demographically, but his intuition and that of federation Chief Operating Officer Ron Galimore from watching events at all age levels since the 2012 Olympics suggests an “explosion of diversity.”

The Under Armour gymnastics commercial featuring an all white team: We know Aly, Gabby and Simone can’t do the commercial because they are signed to other contracts! We are talking about the lack of diversity! Gymnastics isn’t dominated by white girls!

AA are 12% of the population. One in eight. So a team with no black girls is not statistically unusual.
Perhaps you are too conditioned from watching the NFL where there is inverse “diversity”. For example, not a single white cornerback in the entire league..

Personally I think Under Armour is doing a great job of diversity. They are sponsoring Misty Copeland, for example.

That they’re calling three Olympians — Dawes, Orozco and Douglas — and two World team members, Biles and Whittenburg, an “explosion of diversity” with USAG’s only, to date, African American executive (Galimore) seems pretty … Well, pathetic.
You could stretch it back and add Olympians Charlie Lakes (’88) and Chainey Umphrey (’96), along with Dianne Durham, which is generally regarded as the first top-level U.S. women’s team member of color, though she never made a World or Olympic squad. But we’re still talking REALLY small numbers overall, and I’ve honestly just named all of them at this point without running out of fingers to count on. Sad.
