Paul Hamm contrite

Three words I’d not expected to see in the same sentence.

Paul Hamm wants to be remembered as a great Olympic champion, not the guy in the YouTube video.

More than six months after his embarrassing arrest on assault and two other misdemeanor charges, Hamm spoke out Tuesday, saying he regretted what happened and hoped to regain his reputation. …

Finally. If he’d apologized, paid the $23 taxi fare and damages, this might have been over 6 months ago.

OK.

Good luck at Winter Cup. Having trained recently with Jon Horton, Paul’s competing 4 apparatus this weekend.

ESPN W – (W for Wieber)

Alyssa Roenigk posted a terrific profile on our World Champion titled Wieber Fever. It’s the companion piece to the Julie Foudy interview.

After winning a team gold and the individual all-around title at worlds in October, Wieber made it known she wanted to parlay her gold medals into an opportunity to meet The Beebs, the performer to whom she believes she is inextricably tied. They’re both small-town kids with really big dreams who beat the odds to become world renowned at what they do.

Wieber told anyone who would listen that she — and her teammates, of course — would like to meet Bieber. Then she sent out a tweet to her nearly 9,000 followers:

“Now that we are world champions…can we meet Justin Bieber yet? #welldeserved … Who has connections!?!?”

Japan Olympic Champions 2012

That’s the consensus of readers commenting on this site.

They assume Kohei will better than ever — a safe assumption. He’ll be plenty motivated having fallen twice in Beijing during the AA Final.

They assume that China has a plan to win team — but that lack of depth in the AA right now will prevent them from overtaking team Kohei.

… OK — I’m in. Japan will win the Olympics.

Alicia to resume training

Having snapped her Achilles in October at World Championships, she’s already scheduled to return to Brestyans.

… Rehab has gone better than expected, and Sacramone is ahead of schedule for her return to full-time practice, which she expects to resume at the beginning of February. When she does, she’ll follow a slightly unorthodox plan, which she has adhered to since her 2010 comeback: Rather than six hours of daily gymnastics — the norm for many elite gymnasts — Sacramone spends 2½-3 hours in the gym, followed by yoga, Pilates or a cardio session. …

ESPN W – Alicia Sacramone firmly focused on future

I’d love to see Alicia in London. But training only vault and beam, when Team USA needs Bars, makes it a long shot.
