Brett Babcock’s recovery

Here’s an intense and inspiring article. Talk about psychological toughness.

On the first day of October, Babcock, a rising star in the Canadian trampoline firmament and past recipient of the Gus Marker Trophy as Kingston’s top athlete (2009), misfired on a triple-back pike. He’d practiced and pulled off the manoeuvre, which demands three back flips in the pike position on a double mini-trampoline, without incident the past two years.

This time, though, he landed on his neck, dislocating the C5 and C6 vertebrae. The injuries originally left him paralyzed from the neck down. He has since regained some movement in his upper body. …

Brett

To help defray costs, Kingston family physician and Babcock family friend Barbara Fuller has set up a trust account for Babcock. Cash donations can be made at any RBC branch. Donors must ask specifically for the “Barbara Fuller in trust for Brett Babcock” account. Corporate and personal cheques should be sent and made payable to: Barbara Fuller in trust of the Brett Babcock Personal Tragedy Fund. The address is 122 Lakeshore Blvd., Kingston, Ont., K7M 6R5. People who have an account at Royal Bank can make donations electronically.

Head Over Heels About Gymnastics

Head Over Heels About Gymnastics is a child friendly picture book written by Gemma Coles that introduces aspiring young gymnasts to the basics of gymnastics. Through photographs and easy to follow steps, the author guides you through the essential floor skills, and includes little helpful tips along the way!

… Overall I found this book very well written, and I would certainly recommend it to any parent interested with helping their young gymnast succeed.

Brazil slow to hire Mark Goto

Mark Goto, coach of Olympic Rings Champion Arthur Zanetti, was chosen by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) as one of the two best “technicians” in 2012. He received an award for Best Coach of the Year during the Brazil Olympic Award ceremony on 18 December.

Zanetti Goto

It was an amazing upset result.

Yet the Best Coach of the Year was not offered a contract by the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation (CBG) at the end of December.

Arthur Zanetti was extremely pissed, loudly criticizing the Brazilian sport system in the media.

It sounds like Luciene Resende, president of CBG, finally confirmed the renewal of Goto’s contract. But this is more bad press for Gymnastics in the Olympic host nation.

I’m getting all this garbled by Google Translate.

Leave a comment if you’ve got more specific information on whether or not Arthur is happy with the resolution.
