1st NCAA Match Play competition
Illinois men’s gymnastics coach Justin Spring gives his thoughts on the new match play format that was used for the Illini meet vs. Minnesota on March 8, 2013 at Huff Hall. Illinois defeated the Gophers 21-9 in the experimental format.

Here’s Ron Noe’s write-up:
A revolutionary effort to shake things up in College Men’s Gymnastics took place last night in Champaign, IL.
Host Illinois took on Minnesota in the first ever Match Play format.
Carrying on with the 5-up/5-count system, each team went head-to-head on each event in Olympic order. The team behind in the score was then allowed to put their man up last, which allowed for some great strategy, since there were no set lineups. Reviews were mixed, but it certainly added some excitement, at least in the first three rotations. …

Sounds like two apparatus should be competed simultaneously. To save time.
For example: Floor and Pommels, Rings and Vault, P Bars and H Bar
Strategy would be even more complex. 🙂
Andreea Munteanu – Beam
The “senior” competition in Montreal was good, especially Floor and Bars, but there were too many falls.
Despite FIG claiming that artistry will be more important this quadrennial, most coaches still believe that start score will (mostly) determine results. They are doing the hard routines now, hoping to stabilize them … soon.
The Junior competition at Gymnix will be the highlight rotation. There are some BIG routines coming up. For example, Romania’s Andreea Munteanu on Beam.

creating Michael Jackson ONE
Cirque’s ‘Michael Jackson ONE‘ opens at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas May 23, 2013.
Meet Welby Altidor, Director of Creation, and Jamie King, Stage Director of ‘Michael Jackson ONE’. Follow them from the show’s creation room to the costume workshop and the rehearsal studio at Cirque du Soleil International Headquarters.

The 90-minute show will feature five dozen cast members, from dancers to acrobats (no one will portray Jackson), and offer “a very close encounter with the music of Michael Jackson” …
” …focusing on his No. 1 hits. “
After recently having to close Elvis, and laying off hundreds of Montreal workers, I’ve got a feeling Cirque’s going to get this one right.
This is the 2nd Michael Jackson-based production. The first is “Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour,” launched 2011 as a touring act. It grossed $160 million, tops among North American tours in 2012.
… If the one-gloved one doesn’t work for you, you could wait on Burt Wonderstone (VIDEO) getting to Vegas. 🙂
