Chellsie Memmel – Overcoming Fear

If Chellsie Memmel had to overcome fear problems, everyone did. She’s a warrior.

Chellsie:

… you are not alone in having fears. Everyone goes through it at some point or another.

The first major fear I had was learning my blind change on bars when i was eight or nine. I could do them really well on the pit bar with a spot, but fear was stopping me from going any further. …

My dad was finally sick of hearing about it so after a practice at Salto (my old gym) we were at M&M (my parent’s gym) and he said “let’s see one and see how scary it really is.” He built the blocks up so he could be there to spot and was expecting a not-so-great blind since he knew that I was scared. I got up and did …

Olympic sportsmanship

After his own miserable afternoon in the midst of the greatest 24 hours in our Olympic history, Canadian cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth wandered over to the finish line.

His own athletes were all eliminated early. He was crestfallen. He wanted to watch the end of the semifinal in the men’s free sprint.

As he stood there, surrounded by other officials, he spotted Russian Anton Gafarov coming over a rise. Gafarov, an early medal favourite, was struggling miserably.

Elite Canada Jr.

1 Woo, Rose-Kaying Gym-Richelieu 59,050
2 Olsen, Shallon Omega Gymnastics 57,650
3 Rousseau, Audrey Club Equilibrix 55,000

The junior competition was dominated by two gymnasts, Rose-Kaying Woo and Shallon Olsen, who won all five gold medals awarded in this competition.

Rose-Kaying Woo managed to take the all around title mostly due to her consistency. Her ‘easiest’ event was vault where she only had a starting value of 5.0 but managed to execute cleanly. Her biggest scoring event was beam, with 15.20 (6.7). Beware when looking through these scores though as a bonus system was used and the D scores are not in syncwith the FIG Junior Code of Points. Woo also won the event titles on bars and beam respectively. …

I’ve heard Rose-Kaying sometimes trains strap bar and regular bar on alternate turns, rolling down her grips each time to use straps.

1 Moors, Victoria – Dynamo 56,250
2 Yu, Aleeza – Gemini 55,650
3 Black, Ellie – Halifax ALTA 55,250

Unlike the junior competition which was dominated by two gymnasts, in the senior’s meet each title went to a different gymnast:

Victoria Moors managed to take the all around. In the event finals she only competed on bars and beam placing 4th and 7th respectively. Overall, Victoria’s meet was riddled with mistakes, minor and major, but given that her main goal here was to test her new skills in a competition environment, she will be pleased with what she achieved. …
