U Washington wins 1st GymACT West Conference Championship

University of Washington Men defeated the University of Arizona for the first time in the past 15 years.
It was a virtual competition.
Sounds like the GymACT Championships will be in person – Daytona Beach, FL next month.
Michigan wins – finally
One of the biggest problems with women’s NCAA Gymnastics is predictability in results.
Many were happy to see Michigan win Nationals for the first time.
Now we can predict that one of 7 (not 6) teams will likely win next year: Utah, Florida, UCLA, Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia, AND Michigan.
… Cue the LSU fans.
How can we adjust the rules to allow more opportunity for upsets?
Dropping Yurchenko 1/1 to 9.95 start helped. In fact, Michigan was the only team with 6 x 10.0 start vaults. They gambled on hitting those. And it worked.
BEST — I think — would be to more to 5-up, 5-count in Regionals and Nationals.
A 6th competitor would be named who could replace one of those five in case of injury. There should be some deduction if that happens — perhaps 0.5 each counting routine replaced.

It’s a fast growing emerging NCAA scholarship sport.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 45 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA- sanctioned sports and signifies “the best of the best in collegiate athletics”. The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2021 Honda Cup which will be presented on a telecast on CBS Sports Network, on June 28th, at 9 pm ET.

… Burns aims to craft a club program capable of competing against former Big Ten rivals. That’s already being done at schools such as Arizona State and Washington. …
Burns is working with the U’s RecWell department to keep the team’s training facility in Cooke Hall. He needs athletic department permission to use the equipment, and he is seeking approval from the Golden Gopher Fund and donors to use money previously donated for men’s gymnastics scholarships and support.
Alumni are getting involved, too. John Roethlisberger, a three-time NCAA all-around champion for the Gophers, is president of a new group called Friends of Minnesota Men’s Gymnastics. …
