introducing Backwards Flyaway

January 26, 2019 3:00 am

Sure you could SPOT your beginners hundreds of times. 🙄

Better is to set up a soft mat hill so they can practice it on their own.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

That’s Bermuda Gymnastics Association.

We tied one end of the landing mat to the pulleys used for a spotting belt.

Underneath we braced the HILL with spotting boxes.

  1. geez, how may times do we have to revisit this? the key to a flyaway is for the gymnast knowing WHEN to release the bar…..the simplest (and really only necessary progression) is to find a spot 45 degrees up and away from the bar and have the gymnast fix eyes on it….swing….when knees (in tuck) or feet (straight/layout) intersect that spot, just let go…..
start on low bar, coach spots upper arm (thumb down) and hips, emphasize just open palms, do not pull in, and presto! flyaway…..
it should take about 20 repetitions for gymnast to understand when…..about a week to get skill….
