I don’t know what rules Canadian gyms follow, but our church requires criminal record, welfare and vulnerable persons’ checks yearly for all staff and volunteers. In addition, as a volunteer, I must supply 3 written references upon first applying to volunteer with children, even to volunteer once per month. These are followed up with phone interviews of the references and an in person interview with the potential volunteer. My guess is that they are … but that the rules are inconsistently enforced.
