Another great post from HPTCamp.com, the official website of the Adlard’s High Performance Training Camp in Idaho:
Coach John Carney’s “Wall of Death” was a big hit at the 2007 camp.
This drill is ideal for learning and improving your flyaway off bars. It teaches how to “pitch out”, keeping your feet away from the bar.
Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.
Of course it’s equally useful for boys on horizontal bar.

Is that just an 8 inch mat inclined up? What does he have behind that?
Yes. Just a mat tied-on and leaning against the 2 boards.
In another gym I used a ladder.
Wow…possibly the best drill I have ever seen. Going to use this on tomorrow!
i would be so scared to do that if that was how i learned a fly-away, lol. definately looks VERY successful and useful…do you have problems with kids being afraid of it?
I used this drill with some of my younger athletes (they can already do good flyaways alone) and they were terrified of it. But I used it today with a 14 year old girl who has been terrified of flyaways her entire life. There is no way I could get her to do a flyaway with spot even, but she did this drill no problem. I really think it just depends on the kid.
do you know how far away from the bar is the mat placed?? Thanks
The further away from the low bar, the better, I find.
Put the bars as wide as they go, then lean padded 2″x4″ boards (or perhaps a padded ladder) against the high bar.
Then lean a sturdy mat up against the boards.
[...] I am a big fan of Gym East gymnastics and John’s coaching style. Some examples: “Wall of Death†– flyaway video [...]
I love this drill and now wish i did not retire this week …………i would use this today……..possibly the best drill i have seen in years………..but i also loved his tower for clear hips ………..john is a great coach ……..keep up with new drills ………….i will be watching for them!!!!!
Oh my gosh. I did gymnastics for 6 years in junior high and high school, and was always terrified of flyaways since my first coach consistently dropped me. I think this drill would have made me _much_ more confident with flyaways.
