Can anyone confirm this rumour?
Ivana Hong/Nastia Liukin – Gymnastics: from a ten year olds view!
In the USA the federal government rarely directly sponsors sport. (They prefer to funnel tax dollars to Oil Companies and Banks.)
But in Socialist countries like Canada, the Feds provide minimal and inconsistent funding. Then later claim credit for improved health of citizens.
There’s an election in Canada. Which party would do most for gymnastics sports?
Check this website:
Help raise awareness during the federal election about the importance of sport for all. It’s easy. Meet your candidates, ask question, send a letter or host an all-candidates meeting. There are plenty of resources provided below to help you take action.

From The C Score:
The most recent training camp took place at the Karolyi ranch this week, with all of the Olympians absent except for Bridget Sloan. Here’s the news I’ve gleaned, with some commentary:
Chelsea Davis: Davis is apparently doing a double layout on floor! … Apparently she also upgraded on bars, adding a Geinger and a Hindorff …
Ivana Hong: Hong is rumored to be at the camp but without a coach or gym. It’s hard to say where Hong will go now that she has left GAGE …
Amanda Jetter: Jetter now has a DTY and a Patterson dismount on beam …
Jordyn Wieber: The big news is that she is throwing an apparently solid Amanar. …

The new Foundations Recreational Coaching manual – $75 from Gymnastics Canada

It looks fantastic.
And it’s a real successor to the biggest selling gymnastics coaching manual of all-time, the OLD Canadian Introductory Gymnastics NCCP 1 Technical manual.
The same author, Keith Russell, wrote this one.
Gene Schembri (Australia) did layout. The fantastic Georges McKail (Australia) the art.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all recreation gymnastics coaches. It’s the best book available in the English language.
Hat tip to Bev Dickinson from Ruschkin.
Before Nastia there was Hollie Vise from WOGA.

I always loved Hollie’s Bars and Beam.
One blog post in the past drew a lot of discussion: is Texas the center of the gymnastics world?
In the end, I agreed that Romania, with the same population as Texas, had been more successful in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics in recent years.
But since then … another Texas gal won the Olympic Games 2008. At a recent media event, the WOGA trio of Nastia Liukin, Carly Patterson and Hollie Vise showed off their combined 21 Olympic and World Championship medals.
Has Texas NOW surpassed Romania in number and quality of top gymnasts?
I am far more optimistic about Texas than I am about Romania. Texas has far more depth.

UPDATE: The 2009 VISA Championships for men’s and women’s gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, and acrobatic gymnastics will be held Aug. 12-15th in Dallas.
Even at the end of a 4hr workout, these gymnasts had plenty of energy to climb ropes over and over again.

This is Altadore Gym Club, the same Altadore that is looking for a new Women’s Head Coach.

I led sessions at the Recreation and Men’s Artistic streams Oct. 4-5th, 2008 in Lower Sackville & Dartmouth, NS. An excellent event, well organized by Susan Gallagher. Thanks!
Unfortunately I was teaching at every session. And had no time to take in any of the other presenters.
I did my best to try to distract and heckle Allen Duschesne over on trampoline:

Here are a couple of photos from the Men’s sessions. First, using a crash mat to “catch” the gymnast working “bail” (cross support lay away to long hang swing). The boys find it “fun” to splat into the mat at the bottom.

And here’s a unique pommel mushroom so steep that young gymnasts actually find it fairly easy to do single pommel circle.
