The other day International Gymnastics Federation President Bruno Grandi was quoted as saying:

… there were believable indications that China had cheated with the age of some of their gymnasts at the Beijing Olympics last year.

Did he know this study was about to be announced?

BEIJING — X-ray bone analysis of 15,000 young Chinese athletes shows about 20 percent have lied about their ages, provincial sports authorities say.

The analysis was conducted by sports officials in southern Guangdong province and reported on the Web site of the Southern Metropolis Daily.

The confirmation of age-faking again puts pressure on Chinese sports officials. Several of China’s gold-medal winning female gymnasts at last year’s Olympics were widely suspected of being underage, although they were later cleared by officials of the sport’s world governing body.

The southern city of Guangzhou will host next year’s Asian Games, and provincial officials appear to be cracking down beforehand.

“We won’t allow those who faked their age to get any benefit at all,” said Ye Xiquan, deputy director of the provincial sports bureau.

How long before the IOC and FIG must decide what to do with age cheat Olympic medalists from 2000 and 2008?

If they do penalize those athletes, why not go back to other admitted age cheats from earlier Olympics?

I expect the coming media storm will focus on He Kexin, our Olympic Bars Champion.

Likely it’s coincidence, but new FIG Scientific Commission chair Keith Russell comes from University of Saskatchewan, a world leader in bone density research. Professor Russell did a study on wrist x-ray of gymnasts many years ago.

It’s very difficult to determine exact age by any scientific means. But the scrutiny of real assessment, rather than the blanket cover-up we had during the Beijing Olympics, will result in some athletes coming forward and admitting their actual birth date. Baby photos, date stamped, will turn up.

The truth will out. It’s only a matter of time.

Lately it’s been increasingly used to string together several (or even several dozen) individual videos to create interactive video series. Many resemble a 21st-century version of those old “choose your own adventure” kids books or the original, laser disc-driven Dragon’s Lair, and suggest new ways to package future video content. Here’s a sampling to give you a sense of what’s possible in this evolving sub-genre — or at the very least, something to watch during your next lunch break.

Iowa State’s Ceilia Maccani is competing well after not two (like Courtney Kupets) but three ruptured Achilles.

I cannot recall hearing of an Achilles repair tearing a second time. (I’ve been told a repaired Achilles is stronger than the original.)

… Maccani’s injury list … notably includes the three ruptured Achilles tendons. She tore her first one the summer before her senior season of high school. After arriving at ISU, she tore the other one. When she came back from her second tear, Maccani re-ruptured the same tendon again about a month later. …

This injury is very common with FIG Male gymnasts and College Women.

Is there any way to prevent ruptured Achilles by inventing a softer Floor? Or using different springs on a Floor with the same elasticity?

Aditya ‘Romeo’ Dev’s 2 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs less than 20 pounds. AND he can do 16 chin-ups. AND something like a press to handstand.

In summer of 2008, Aditya was diagnosed with aneurysms which, if left untreated, are a serious threat to his life. Aneurysms and Moyamoya are common symptoms of the syndrome MOPD II, which is the cause of Aditya’s small stature.

No doubt College female gymnasts are well trained in how to give “safe” responses to media questions.

Their interviews are mostly BORING.

Actually, I find that most of the top College coach are colourful and outspoken. Engaging and entertaining both in person and with the media. That’s one reason they have been successful with the young adults on their teams.

Even soft spoken Greg Marsden of Utah is always interesting.

SENIOR SEND OFF

Seniors Kristina Baskett and Nina Kim, both nationally-ranked all-arounders, will make their final home appearance this Friday. Baskett (Normandy Park, Wash.) is a seven-time All-American who won the 2006 NCAA uneven bar title as a freshman. She placed second in the nation on the vault last year and was third in the all-around.

… currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the all-around and on bars, No. 3 on vault and No. 15 on floor.

End of an era at Utah.

They expect to break the NCAA attendance record for gymnastics at this meet. That’s 13,164 spectators average for home meets.

Kim (Houston, Texas), a four-year USA National Team member prior to college, has been a clutch performer at the NCAA Championships, hitting 18-of-18 routines. She has made Utah’s Academic Athletics Honor Roll all three years. Kin ranks second on the team in victories this season with eight and is currently ranked No. 11 nationally in the all-around, No. 6 on beam and No. 19 on vault.
