looking for an athletic scholarship?

I’ve attended excellent presentations in the past with Tom Kovic of Victory Collegiate Consulting. Tom is an ideal consultant for those looking for best practice when applying for scholarships.

He’s just launched a new service:

Tom Kovic, current director of Victory Collegiate Consulting has developed a low cost and educational website that will help parents and their children gain valuable information on college athletics recruiting.

Collegerecruiting.tv is loaded with published articles written by Kovic who is a former 19 year women’s gymnastics college coach at The University of Pennsylvania. In addition, the website will offer podcasts and video interviews in an effort to provide families and prospects with the necessary tools to build their personal college recruiting plans.

“As an advisor to families and prospective student-athletes throughout the country, I realized the need to develop a resource website that would assist families in building a strong base of information as they develop and implement their plans for the college search. Having written dozens of articles for many online sports magazines, while conducting several interviews, I realized that there was a natural flow of information that could act as an effective step by step organization tool that families could productively use in preparing for an important life process.”

Kovic’s aim is to provide families and their children with unlimited access to a seamless source of college athletics information that will be easy to grasp and create a strong understanding about how the potentially complicated area of college recruiting works.

Gymnastics World Cup Cottbus

German star Fabian Hambüchen and Olympic all-around silver medalist Kohei Uchimura headline the 33rd “Tournament of Masters” in Cottbus, Germany, which begins Friday.

The traditional “Turnier der Meister” is the second World Cup meet this year after the Gymnix event in Montreal. Several countries are regrouping after the Olympic Games in Beijing last year, but Cottbus stilll has managed to draw an exciting field of 111 gymnasts. …

Lets see. Of 111 competitors, 80 are Men. That leaves about 30 in the Women’s competition.

More women than in the woeful first World Cup in Montreal. But why such a great imbalance in the number of competitors?

Trampoline Canada blog

Bryan Milonja edits the excellent Trampoline Canada blog.

I’ve subscribed by RSS feed.

One sample post:

Here’s a video on Charles Thibault that Julien Roberge and I worked on together.

Thibault, who trains at ITECQ in Quebec City, is currently ranked as the second best male trampolinist in the country.

The video includes parts of an interview I conducted with Thibault after he won the 2nd Quebec Cup on February 28th in Saint-Hyacinthe. The compulsory routine shown in the video is from this same meet and the optional work is from some of his previous training sessions.

new Taylor Lindsay-Noel website

Elite Canadian gymnast Taylor Lindsay-Noel was injured July 15, 2008 when “attemping a complex high bar dismount from the parallel uneven bars”.

She’s since been paralyzed from the neck down.

Taylor is currently a patient at Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Centre.

My name is Taylor Lindsay-Noel. If you are reading this it means you heard of me and have an interest in finding out more or supporting me on my miracle journey to walk again.

This site was set up to let the public know about what happened to me and how they can support the efforts of everyone involved in assisting me on my journey. Also to thank everyone for their generosity, prayers and support to me and my family.

Utah Gymnastics strength program

An interesting glimpse into Utah’s conditioning program.

This 9min video shows part of the team maintenance program mid-season.

Jon Webster is the Utah Strength and Conditioning Coach.

This was filmed on March 7, the morning after Utah’s home meet against Arizona State. The Utah team typically conditions twice a week during season, with one of the workouts being mid-morning on Saturdays so they can take the remainder of the weekend off.

Gymnastics In Europe

This looks like a trend. Another European gymnastics blog.

gymnastics4 began posting March 4th. It’s called Gymnastics In Europe.

This blog will try and cover as much European Gymnastics news as possible especially stuff that is not made available on other blogs and websites.

A sample post: Cottbus 2009

The tournament of masters in Cottbus will take place on 20-22 March. The entries for the Women’s Competition only includes 32 participants with Romania, Russia, Great Briatain and France … Particpants of interest include Hu Yuhong and Sui Lu of China. …

… The Netherlands team will be Wyomi Masela and Lieke Wevers. Lieke is Sanne Wevers twin sister and has strong routines on bars and beam and an elegant floor routine. Like her sister she has difficult turns on beam. This is her bars routine from the recent Dutch Euro Trials even though she fell she has potential to score highly and I hope she gets into the final this weekend. …

Love the releases. But overuse of toe-on, toe-off?

was gymnastics better in the 1980s?

I’m always saying the best Women’s Artistic Gymnastics was in the late 1980s in the former Soviet Union.

Many agree.

But after watching the latest MostepanovaFan video, I’m not so sure.

Montage of gymnasts from the 80s performing skills, followed by people still performing them today.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

In most cases the modern version is better than the 1980s version.

Of course it’s not a fair comparison. The apparatus is far better now. AND we have so many good Chinese gymnasts now.

More MostepanovaFan video posts.

Note that YouTube has already disabled the audio. I’m getting increasingly irked with YouTube. It will be time to leave for another service soon.

Perhaps GymnastTube.

first year in College gymnastics?

I recall how nervous Stephanie McGregor was about going to Oregon State University on gymnastics scholarship.

Then how excited and happy she was on returning home for her first Christmas.

She made the transition from club to College gymnastics fairly easily.

It doesn’t always go so well. …

The COUCH GYMNAST posted the best overview I’ve seen on what it’s like to be a Freshman gymnast on an NCAA Gymnastics Team.

The emphasis on TEAM. Dealing with new coaches. Living far away from family. Keeping up your grades. Being a “celebrity” athlete at some schools. Competing with the NOISE … sometimes you cannot hear your Floor music. Reduced training hours. Competing 16 times in just a few months. Sometimes 3 times in the same week. Making the “line-up” as a rookie.

It’s a great read.
