TV commercial for Bluewater Gymnastics

This was posted by coach Dave Brubaker on Facebook.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

I really like the introduction.

How does a gym club afford a spot of that quality?

Dave explains:

… actually it was filmed by CBC and edited with our graphics. It is not our facility at all. I just paid to have the commercial tailored to our club. “Graphics overlay”. That way a group of clubs were able to split the production costs. …

The real Bluewater Gymnastics facility can be seen on their website.

I assume the bubble shown in the TV spot is Ortona Gymnastics in Edmonton.

Cirque World Record stilt walking

Guinness World Records has confirmed that Cirque du Soleil has reclaimed the record for most people walking on stilts in multiple venues. 1908 participants from Montreal, Moscow, New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, Macau and Brazil can now call themselves Guinness World Records record holders.

In other Cirque news, billionaire founder Guy Laliberte threatens to sue over a new book and has booked a Sept. 30th flight to the International Space Station in a Soyuz spacecraft.

Yurchenko Vault – Mas Watanabe

I just watched the archived version of a gymnastics coaching presentation by sensai Mas Watanabe. It was streamed live June 23, 2009.

Technical Refinement – Yurchenko Vault (1hr 5min)

As expected, Mas feels the contact position on the horse is critical.

Yurchenko-contact-angle

Mas also spent a good deal of time looking at exact body position on the spring board.

Yurchenko-board-position

Which of the 4 gymnast do you think had the strongest Yurchenko?

I learned a lot about the importance of of the arms action and hands position during the round-off. Mas really understands this confusing phase.

This is the most detailed and sophisticated analysis of the Yurchenko I’ve yet seen. It’s a great jumping off point for discussion on variations in technique for different body types.

How do you watch it?

This was week 4 of Project 2012

USAproject2012

official website

… highlighting the essential techniques for gymnastics success in the next quadrennium. This 12-week event, brings the best coaches in the United States to your computer screen doing LIVE lectures and demonstrations on the most important cutting-edge information in our sport.

Session One begins Tuesday June 2 at 6pm PST-9pm EST and once a week until July 7th. (US$199)

Session Two runs from July 14 through August 18th.

Sessions normally are 45 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of question and answer, using live lecture, video, power point, and of course your questions, all on your computer.

Project 2012 has nothing to do with the USA Gymnastics Congress events. Yet I still find myself thinking of it as the “poor man’s Gymnastics Congress”.

If your club has cut costs this year, declining to send coaches to Congress. This is a GREAT alternative.

Running every Tuesday night, here are the 4 presenters posted so far:

June 2 – Mary Lee Tracy: “Creating an Efficient Conditioning Program”

June 9 – Tom Forster: “In-bar Elements – Determining The Best For Each Gymnast”

June 16 – Chris Burdette: “Shootovers and Pacs: Drills and Spotting Techniques”

June 23 – Mas Watanabe: “Yurchenko vault – technical refinement”

(Chris Burdette had some technical problems with video. He will be rescheduled for sometime in future.)

Coming up:

June 30 Russell Warfield: “Raising the Barre: Understanding the importance of Dance for Gymnastics”

July 7 Tammy Biggs: “Leap or Die: the key to scoring on beam and floor in the next quadrennium”

Term Two: 6 weeks beginning July 14th – August 18th

July 14 – Tom Forster: “Releases – Selecting And Training The Ones To Fit Your Gymnast”

July 21 – Mary Lee Tracy: “Training Beam to HIT”

July 28 – Kim Zmeskal Burdette: “Coaching with a Judging Eye”

Aug 4 – Mas Watanabe: “Development of the combination tumbling sequences – utilizing the tumble track”

Aug 11 – Tammy Biggs: “Skills that should be done on beam”

Aug 18 – Russell Warfield: “So you think they can’t dance? Creative ways to incorporate Dance into your Gymnastics Program.”

You can watch streamed presentations archived online. But cannot download them to watch offline. (Actually, once the presentation is buffered in the Network Recording Player software, you can watch it and rewatch it offline. But not transfer it to an iPod, for example.)

Distance learning is the future. No doubt.

Project 2012 is just the beginning. Congratulations.

Tiger Paws wrist supports – the video

Tiger Paws wrist supports have become unbelievably popular with female gymnasts in North America.

Tiger_Paws

Jay Thornton of American Gymnast explains how they work. And proper sizing.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Where I live Tiger Paws are not nearly so popular with power tumblers or male gymnasts.

As always, I recommend you not use wrist supports if you don’t need them. But – if you do need them – wear them always.

watch Fake It or Break It online

If you live in the USA, you might be able to watch the premiere episode online for free.

ABC Family’s new Gymnastics TV series Make it or Break It debuted …

This is an exciting drama is set in the high stakes world of competitive gymnastics and follows a group of elite teenage gymnasts as they deal with parents, boyfriends, coaches, rivalry and betrayal. If you missed it … you can watch it online at… ABC Family

GK Elite

Some in the comments on the ABC page report problems on their computer.

In the USA you can buy the episode from the iTunes store.

Chelsea-Hobbs

In Canada I can neither stream nor buy the show. That’s frustrating. It’s an ethical dilemma whether or not to download an unofficial copy FREE …

Companies like ABC that cannot organize a way to conveniently sell product that is infinitely reproducible at no cost should not be surprised when fans find a workaround.

what is Olympic Day?

23 June is Olympic Day

On June 23, 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin in France began the task of reviving the Olympic Games.

He set up a committee in charge of organising the first Games and beginning the modern international Olympic Movement. The first modern Games were fixed for Athens in 1896 and the International Olympic Committee was officially created.

Best known is the Olympic Day Run.

Nastia celebrated Olympic Day with media at one of the WOGA gyms. As always, she was asked about the 2012 Olympics:

… “I feel like I still have potential in me. I’m learning some new skills.

“As long as I enjoy it, and my body feels OK, then why not?”

The first step, though, is competing again. Not coincidentally, that will occur during the 2009 Visa U.S. Championships Aug. 12-15 at American Airlines Center.

Assuming Liukin then qualifies for the World Championships in October in London, she can set the American record for world medals won. Liukin is currently tied with Shannon Miller at nine. …

While Liukin’s return to competition in August is the headline, she’s not the only Dallas-area gymnast to watch – even from her own gym. Ivana Hong, an alternate for the Beijing Games, now trains here under Valeri Liukin, Nastia’s father and coach. Rebecca Bross, the 2007 junior national champion who also trains under Valeri, is healed from knee surgery and could also make noise in her first senior national championship.

Single-session tickets went on sale Tuesday (1-800-745-3000 or http://www.tickemaster.com) and range from $10 to $80. All-session tickets are $95-$350.

Fake It or Break it?

ABC Family is hoping for another Secret Life of the American Teenager hit TV series.

Make-It-or-Break-it

As expected, gymnastics experts mostly are mortified: … I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. It’s so ridiculously unrealistic …

Why don’t they make more effort at realism?

On the other hand, when I searched Twitter during the premiere broadcast, most people were enjoying the new show.

I read too that this was the second highest rated premiere in network history. (That’s impressive considering only about 11 males watched it.)

We may all be stuck trying to explain the many gymnastics errors in this show for some time.

details on gymnastics death in Australia

A few more facts have been released, including the name of the gymnast who seems to have had a strong gymnastics background:

The mother of a 19-year-old gymnast who died last week in Townsville in north Queensland says there was nothing freakish about the training accident.

Michelle Maitland hit her head after a falling from the tumble track last Thursday.

She was admitted to Townsville General Hospital in a critical condition and died early on Friday.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is investigating the death.

Her mother, Anne Maitland, says a safety mat was missing from where it would normally be and her daughter hit her head on the concrete.

Nothing freakish about fatal gymnast’s accident, mum says

Initially I feared this might be a “dumb” Adult Recreation gymnastics fall. But to me it sounds only a very sad and unfortunate accident.

We have the same problem in my gym. Reminding everyone to return safety mats to their normal location.

My condolences to the family.

UPDATE:

I am Michelle Maitland’s mother. Thanks for condolences. Michelle was not doing anything radical at Gymnastics Townsville and had only returned to the adult class this year, not having been inside a gym centre since 2002. Yes, it would have been a good idea for Michelle to check the mats herself but was just going around a normal circuit with the group and coach. She did a layout off the tumble tramp’ and I am guessing she realised the crash mat was not there as she went over and tried to pull the somersault short so as to land on the thin mat immediatly at the end of the tramp- that would have made her feet skid forward and her head smashed into the concrete. A very basic error. No reports have been completed by WH&S or the Coroner as yet. I have advise the Gymnastics officials at a state and national level that I would expect them to install some sort of safety flooring or permenant matting in all gyms but they are waiting for the reports before taking any voluntary action. Even the rubbery material put around all playground equipment would be better than concrete I believe.

Mary Lee Tracy on Kettle Bells

Gymnastic conditioning drills using kettle bells from Mary Lee Tracy. Kettle Bells seem to be one of the latest conditioning crazes.

I like how the YouTube description is worded.

A good friend, coach Mike Lemieux, has been trying to convince me for years of the benefits of Kettle Bells.

I’ve been reluctant to buy in because of the danger of kids dropping them – or throwing them – by accident. Especially boys.

I am traumatized still after seeing a young competitive male gymnast drop a free weight on his big toe when goofing around in the gym. It’s one of the worst accidents I’ve seen during training.

This video has helped convince me of the benefits, however.

The Gymnastics Minute is a new series of free introductory video tips produced by GymSmarts.

Coach Chris was critical of the technique used in this particular video. Gymnastics coaches should be certified before adding them into their conditioning program. Or to bring in a certified coach to instruct them.

UPDATE: Mary Lee let us know that she brought in a certified trainer to train her coaching staff.
