Tatiana Gutsu – photo shoot

The 1992 Olympic Champion, Tatiana Gutsu, was never one of my favourite gymnasts. I recall being very disappointed that she won in Barcelona.

I’ve not heard good things about Tatiana as a coach, either. (I hope I heard wrong.)

Gymnastics…and other things linked to quite a good recent photo shoot, however.

I didn’t have the heart to embed a horrible fluff video. Nor a horrible Gutsu montage.

If you’ve got something good to say about the Olympic Champion, please add a comment.

teaching gymnasts to keep legs straight

In the former Soviet Union young boys and girls took 1hr ballet training every day.

No wonder they had great “form”.

Most gymnastics coaches in 2010 need to find faster, more efficient methods to motivate and teach children to keep legs straight, feet stretched.

Keeping great leg form will improve your scores. Here Mary Lee Tracy shows several drills to improve leg strength and improve leg form.

I really appreciate busy coaches like Mary Lee taking time to share with us.

Florida gymnast Dounia Bendris injured

Make It or Break It might be a lame TV show when it comes to explaining gymnastics to the general public.

But one theme is important. How does a dedicated athlete handle serious injury. Especially if they cannot return to the sport.

While the fictional Payson was falling on Shoot Half on Bars at National Championships, fracturing her back, a real life gymnast in Florida suffered a catastrophic injury on Bars.

… High School senior Dounia Bendris was practicing at Broadway Gymnastics in Oviedo when she slipped off the uneven bars, broke two ribs, collapsed a lung and severed her spinal cord.

Doctors told the 17-year-old that she was paralyzed from the waist down four days after Christmas. …

Supergirl sponsors Nastia’s new meet

Good tie-in. I’m really looking forward to this competition.

… In fact, I’m looking forward to it more than the Scam American Cup.

… She and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Supergirl, the brand based on the DC Comics character who is Superman’s younger cousin, will sponsor the inaugural Nastia Liukin Cup in March. …

The Nastia Liukin Supergirl Cup is an event for up-and-coming gymnasts, not elite athletes. Qualifying meets began last weekend, and 36 girls will advance to the March 5 event at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass. The girls will get a special leotard that’s been designed by Liukin and has the Supergirl “S” shield on the sleeve, and they will be introduced at the American Cup the following day. …

It’s difficult to find good photos and videos of male College gymnasts. Those programs could go a long way towards promoting the sport if only they made more media files available.
