Jr EU podium – Russians stole the show

So says American Coach Hal Halverson, who’s there in the U.K. as part of the organizing committee.

The All Around’s Albert Minguillón i Colomer is there too. It wasn’t all sunshine for the Russkies:

… The Russians took the stage in the subdivision 5.

First up showed a double turn with leg to head, 1 1/2 – 1/1, double pike, double back, 2/1. Next on floor opened with a 1 1/2 through 3/1, Tsukahara, double pike and a short double tuck.

Victoriya Komova had a not so hot floor with a 1 1/2 through double arabian in tuck position (low landed), double back (stuck), 3/1 (a bit underrotated) and double pike to end. After the routine, she trained a Tsukahara tucked to change the double back!

After her, gracious Anastasia Grishina danced to classical music with a stuck double pike, double turn with leg at horizontal to stag jump (beautiful), 3/1, triple turn, 1 1/2 – 1/1 and a short 2 1/2 that saved to sit down. Violetta Malikova, who has been injured, opened her routine with a double turn with leg to head, back layout, 2 1/2, 1 1/2 through 1/1 and 2/1. The twisting technique was a bit rough and with legs apart and crossed. …

Russians vaulted quick, all of them Yurchenko entries type vaults. I don’t know if my eyes were tired or what, but Komova overrotated a double twisting Yurchenko.

On bars, suprisingly, Komova was the first up with an excellent Shaposhnikova 1/2, inside stalder 1/2 – layout Jaeger, inside stalder 1/1 – Tkatchev – Pak, Tsukahara off. The second Russian gymnast didn’t have the same lines but her routine was difficult with a stalder – toe- on 1/1 – Tkatchev, Pak, double front off.

Grishina was up next with a inside stalder 1/1 – piked Jaeger, inside stalder – inside stalder 1/1 – piked Tkatchev – Pak, giant 1/1 – Tsukahara off. Malikova had problems with her routine, inside stalder – in-stalder 1/1 – Tkatchev – Pak, form break and fall, toe on Shaposhnikova, double front off.

The fifth Russian, did a Shaposhnikova, Markelov, Tuskahara off. Clearly, the weakest link on bars.

Update: Blythe Lawrence is there too:

… The Romanians looked very well prepared themselves. I attended a portion of the afternoon training session and was able to see the Romanian juniors perform on bars, beam and floor. Young Diana Bulimar was the cream of the team. A few notes:

In person, the Romanian juniors don’t look dreadful on bars. …

All agree that Vault is the weak apparatus. Coaches focus on Bars and Beam, waiting for the Juniors to get strong and heavy enough to vault from the fixed F.I.G. beat board. (They are not allowed to remove springs.)

best EU Junior Bar routines

In a continuing series on the gymnastics issues blog:

I think the Russian Team as a whole will be points ahead of everyone else on this apparatus. The top 2 should be Viktoria Komova annd Anastasia Grishina. The rest of the team are also good on bars and are worthy of the bars final if one of the top 2 messes up in qualification: Anastasia Sidorova (D Score: 5.40), Maria Paseka (D Score 5.80) and Violetta Malikova (D Score: 5.90).

Although it will be close I think Komova will win ahead of Grishina but either way they are both excellent on this piece and have start values of 6.50 …

The second best routine, he feels, is Anastasia Grishina. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

With very similar construction, the #1 pick is Viktoriya Komova (VIDEO).

Looks like she could easily add another twist to both those vaults. They’re so high and extended.

In College Finals the girls must show two different vaults, not necessarily from two different families. Yet they qualify to Finals with only one vault, a safety concern as kids (not Vanessa) “chuck” vaults they’ve hardly done all year. … Or compete vaults of less than 10.0 start value.

It was obvious to anyone who sat through 1hr 40min of Vault Finals on Saturday that the current scheme is a disaster.

I’d have gymnasts compete one vault in Finals, instead. But many people I talked to at Championships, including College coaches, preferred having kids that want to compete Finals, do two different vaults in team preliminaries. Mathematically, that would reduce the number of Finalists.

Update: College Gymnastics Board discussion – Let’s talk vault event finals – how do you fix it?

Aunt Joyce has commentary and links to more videos: Anna Li’s vault, Brittani McCullough’s winning Floor, Hollie Vise’s Floor, Courtney McCool’s Beam. AND Susan Jackson’s very difficult Beam routine to win Finals. Susan killed it, the most convincing win in Finals.

gymnast Kerri Strug marries

The gold medal-winning gymnast best known for her heroic vault in the 1996 Olympics, married attorney Robert Fischer … Sunday. …

… The couple invited a few familiar faces, too: Strug’s Olympic teammate Dominique Moceanu and her former coach, Bela Karolyi. …

Certainly, Great Britain is the most improved nation in Men’s Gymnastics.

College gymnastics is going to be fresh in 2011. Some epic Florida vs UCLA battles to come, I expect.
