Khorkina on Pilkin

Svetlana Khorkina:

”To this day I thank God that he gave me Pilkin. And it’s not because we won so many titles and medals together. He and I travelled a 20-year path on the edge of risk (what is gymnastics without risk?) and I never had a single injury.

Coaches often try and force training and bam!- there is an injury. All girls are different. Some have growing bones, others a weak back, and others still react in their way to over training. You have to be very careful to reach peak form. And absolutely with an individual training regime.

Grandpa had his second heart attack defending my rights to an individual workouts in front of head coach Leonid Arkayev.

So, here I am, my arms and legs and back are all healthy. And I have a son….

Boris Pilkin died last year, age-82.

I’d add this to this group of drills helping kids learn how to rotate: Gainer, Cody, … and (perhaps) Kaboom.

I visited my old friend Kelly Manjak about 6wks before the Canadian Championships.

Their club was even better than I expected. A great facility. The girls healthy, motivated and very independent.

I tried to capture the essence of what’s going right at Oakville, but was a bit disappointed in how the video turned out. (I need to take a course in video editing.)

Nikki, interviewed in the video, trains specifically for College gymnastics. Smart. The other girls train as much as 32hrs / week.

More and better videos of Oakville are posted on Sabrina Gill’s YouTube Channel.

Germans unhappy with Tokyo Worlds

Not all Germans.

Hambüchen is comfortable to go to Japan for the World Championships in October.

But there are still safety concerns. Women’s head coach Ulla Koch would prefer that the meet had been moved.

Will anyone boycott Japan due to the risk of radiation?

Not anyone in contention for Olympics qualification, I predict.

Fabian is a bit of a spokesman for the meet.

the return of Chloe Sims

Chloe Sims, the powerful Aussie gymnast, 2006 Commonwealth Games all-around champion, retired just before the Beijing Olympics. We were disappointed.

She’s back. And looking strong.

Pan Am Games now age-16

I saw this on Gymn.ca:

Gymnastics has been dealt another blow; At the FIG’s request, the age minimum for October’s Pan Am Games (Gaudalajara, Mexico) will be raised from 14 to 16. Many nations were earmarking the event to give 1996 born girls experience competing at a Major Games, on podium.

The Games also follow on the heels of this year’s World Championships, making it difficult to field the same athletes to both events. …

Each sport is different. For Taekwondo it’s age-15:

As per XVI Pan American Games Technical Manual, Chapter 3, pg 21-Age of
Competitors; all competitors must be born beginning of January 1, 1996.
Minimum age must be 15 years old …

PDF

Formerly the Pan Am Games, like Pacific Rim and the All-Africa Games, permitted FIG seniors and juniors to compete together.

The 2011 Pan American Games, officially the XVI Pan American Games or the 16th Pan American Games, will be a major international multi-sport event that will be held from October 14–30, 2011 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico …

The only upside is that Senior girls from Pan-Am nations who do not qualify for Worlds in Tokyo, will have an alternate meet that still helps them prepare for the (possible) Second Olympic Qualification – Test Event January 2012, London.

Most nations, I assume, will send two different teams to the two October meets. If they can.

Hamm, Suarez join Ohio State

Complete change of regime, it would seem …

I hope the gymnasts are all on board.

After days of speculation, new Ohio State men’s gymnastics coach Rustam Sharipov made it official today that Orlando Metro coach Casimiro Suarez and 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Paul Hamm are officially on board as assistant coaches.

We don’t need to elaborate too much about Hamm’s background, of course, but it’s assumed that he will also continue his training on the Buckeyes’ campus. Most recently, Suarez is well known as the coach for JO Nationals AA champions Sean Melton (’11) and Jake Martin (’10). …
