Danell Leyva – Horizontal Bar (VIDEO)

Just came up.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube. (16.9 including BONUS)

The score of is about 0.5 higher than it would be at Worlds due to USAG BONUS rules. (PDF)

I don’t mind bonus rules, but it would be less confusing if nations posted straight FIG results … and then printed a separate results list with Bonus included for ranking, team selection, etc.

Danell’s 92.50 AA, of course, is also higher than FIG.

Thanks to The All Around for finding that Bonus document. We’re assuming the same BONUS system was used for this routine.

That’s not what I do, though. Instead of Lyle’s Golden Syrup (more often honey), I like supersaturated sugar water. I boil sugar water in a microwave for perhaps a minute. … It’s much less slimy than honey.

Nathan Gafuik at Universiade

Nathan Gafuik has worked as hard for as long as any gymnast I can recall. It’s great to see him put it together in such a big meet.

After putting Canada on the board on Monday thanks to a third-place finish in the individual all-around competition, Nathan Gafuik struck again on Tuesday with a silver medal at the vault on the final day of artistic gymnastics action at the 26th Summer Universiade.

meanwhile, at the Russian Cup

Prelims:

1. Afanasyeva 58.675
2. Dimentieva 58.550
3. Komova 57.150

Ksenia Afanasyeva is looking to be a lock yet again with those strong scores across the board. Her many fans will get another chance to see if she can get past the psychological issues that seem to dog her at every final. It would be nice see her return from Tokyo with an individual medal this time.

Komova looks to have had trouble on beam. …

* Note that USAG rules have a few bonus tenths. For example, 0.1+ for a stuck landing of elements D or more difficult. (Leyva’s HBar had +0.5 bonus this night.)

… “I need some more to reach [Kohei] Uchimura, but that’s what I’m working on,” he said.

Alvarez was not surprised by Leyva’s effort on day one. He says he always hits his routines at their Miami gym, where they do extra on pommel horse, a weakness of the U.S. team. He also wrote down his potential score on paper and showed it to Danell a while ago, but Danell thought the lofty number was crazy.

It was 92.50. …
