Ron Galimore – the gymnast

As a big fan of DaVanche (Ron) Galimore, the gymnast, back in the day, I was happy to see this retrospective feature appear, posted by one of his former teams:

Iowa State gymnast Ron Galimore took his sport by storm en route to becoming one of the greatest gymnasts of all-time. The Cyclone also blazed a trail to where no African-American had gone before after coming to the Iowa State campus in the fall of 1980. …

Ed Gagnier was Galimore’s coach at Iowa State. During the three years Gagnier coached Ron, he viewed him as the most explosive gymnast he had ever seen or had the opportunity to coach.

“Ron was a fit gymnast,” Gagnier said. “For starters, he had the muscular structure that no one else did, the unique ability to be able to explode in his performances. He seemed to be ahead of everybody else. He was so spectacular and could achieve such great height in his moves. It made him stand out.”

While at Iowa State, Galimore enjoyed unprecedented success. Perhaps his most notable achievement was scoring a perfect 10 on the vault at the 1981 NCAA Championships. This feat marked the first time in NCAA history any athlete had reached the perfect plateau. Galimore did it in his final collegiate vault, which made it more remarkable. …

Black History Month: Ron Galimore

Bruce Davis:

Among my favorite memories of Ron were his sky high double backs performed on crude mats in 90 degree heat at Miami Central HS during JO training sessions. He made the other black kids who were in the gym playing basketball, eyes pop, when he performed his floor exercise routine.

Ron was also an expert on trampoline. I remember him bouncing at my private gym with 20’ high ceiling beams. He would go up and catch the steel beam with his hands and hang and attract my attention by kicking and laughing. Pretty soon he had worked out a ten bounce routine after each beam grab executing a different trick every time he returned to the trampoline. …

Today Ron is Chief Operating Officer for USAG.

Ivan Zubkevych – advanced planche

Ivan Zubkevych is a circus acrobat most recently performing in Germany and Switzerland.

He’s got some planche variations I’ve never seen before.

I’ve always considered Paul O’Neill the strongest planche man I’ve ever seen. But Ivan is up there with the best.

Who else could contend for the greatest planche all-time?

(Thanks Mia)

diving – not a pretty face

The Telegraph has a series of photos featuring the faces of divers, mid-flight.

At the same time you can check form and body position, not nearly as good as it looks at normal speed.

This week’s gymnastics workout video features the team who won seven gold medals at last year’s JO Nationals, Brown’s Gymnastics of Las Vegas.

Just a few days after this workout was filmed, senior Randii Wyrick achieved her goal of qualifying to the 2012 Nastia Liukin Cup with an amazing all around score of 38.60. Wyrick is the reigning JO National Champion on vault and has signed to compete for LSU next season. Elizabeth Gangale is the reigning JO National All Around and Vault champion for the junior B division, making incredible strides to go from last to first place at Nationals in one year!

‘do try this at home’

Ceiling Stand = using banister for support, raise legs into the air and place both feet on the ceiling. Lock into position, keeping body vertical.

That’s just one of the classic moves on House Gymnastics. 🙂

the great Maria Filatova

Two time Russian Olympic gymnastics champion, Maria Filatova, now age 50, is battling to regain her official Russian passport/citizenship status, so she can travel outside of the United States and return to her home town and home country. …

She currently lives and owns a gym in Rochester, New York and has applied unsuccessfully for a new Russian passport a number of times. Her application has always been rejected with the stated reason being “lack of merit.” There are many things that one might say about Maria Filatova, but none of them could ever involve her displaying a lack of merit. …

Gymnastics Zone

Leave a comment on that post if you have any special insight into the Russian passport process.

Maria Filatova … (born July 19, 1961, Leninsk-Kuznetsky, Siberia) is a retired Soviet gymnast who competed at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics.

… She was one of the first female gymnasts to successfully compete a double back somersault on floor in 1975. …

In fact, a new profile by Elizabeth Booth and Vladimir Zaglada credits Maria as one of the greatest innovators all-time, though many of these firsts were seen only in the former Soviet Union.

Maria Filatova’s innovations:

Vault Tsukuhara with full twist (1976 USSR Nationals EF)

Uneven Bars From giant circle, cross hands half turn into straddle
forward somersault to hang on high bar

Beam Flic-flac layout/two layouts in a row

Beam dismount Flic-flac x 2 (2 feet) – double twist/double back/double pike

Floor Round off-flic flac – double back/double pike/full-in back out (the first on the Soviet team)

… Many people believe that Maria merited all around gold at her final competition, the 1981 World Championships. Having ‘set the table’ for the Soviet team, her qualification scores did not give her the same bonus as her rivals. I prefer, though, to think of Filatova the way she is described in the Russian Gymnastics Hall of Fame : ‘the strongest gymnast of the 1970s’. …

Macready, Roethlisberger in the mud

What are John Macready and John Roethlisberger up to now?

Mudder Fest is one of the few mud runs that has a permanent home, which gives the makers the freedom to create an outstanding course with unique obstacles built into the terrain.

Mountains of hay bails, quad-burning hills and vertical climbs will require some teamwork, perseverance and maybe a little stupidity to make it through. Our “DJ corners” will keep the beat pumpin’ throughout the course and add a little extra inspiration for those who need it. Every step will be different and every jump a surprise …

details – mudderfest.com

These mud races are big right now. Johns had Shawn Johnson wallowing in mud last year. 🙂

Dave Adlard is organizing one in Idaho, as well.

Kudos to Roethlisberger for the great job he did hosting IG Radio today. (Orozco, Mauro, Peszek, Zmeskal, …)
