CAN @ USA MAG Camp

Canadian Jr National MAG Coach Markos Baikas:

… a few pictures from the training camp with the U.S. Juniors in Colorado Springs, Feb 20 -26. …

Great experience for the athletes and coaches. And a great welcome from USA Gymnastics.

The American Juniors are bloody good.

UCLA throws down – 198.050

That’s a VERY HIGH number.

Couch Gymnast:

… UCLA, who have been floundering a little this season have just knocked out a massive score of 198.050 against Arizona State. …

According to our college writer, Lauren Hopkins, the scoring looked to be fair and well-deserved in what was simply a spectacular performance by the star-studded team. …

Comeback kid Vanessa Zamarripa killed the all around with a final score of 39.625, chased by Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs with a 39.575. …

UCLA Earns Mammoth Score

If Vanessa’s 100% ready come Championships, UCLA just might be the narrow favourites to win another team title.

On the other hand, UCLA’s Sam Peszek said recently that she feels the top 6 Team that puts everything together on THE DAY will win in 2012. There are a lot of contenders this season.

gymnastics “wall”

I can’t coach without wall space. Every day, every gymnast needs to do my wall complex just after warm-ups. If you’ve got problems with handstand, you’ve got problems with gymnastics.

At Eastside Gymnastics Academy in Woodinville, WA, they’ve got an ideal wall with floor bars at the ready.

odd Japanese Gymnastics ad

gedatzeni:

I stumbled across this advertisement on Fuji TV …

The original video did not have sound for some strange reason, so I decided to put some new music on instead. I hope you all find it as amusing as I did!

I love the characters so much that I even made the FX (Yukazo) my wallpaper a few months ago! …

Nebraska – breaking the rules

Dan Kendig again competed 5 all-arounders, something unheard of in Collegiate gymnastics … except in case of emergency.

What if one of your AA girls is injured or ill?

How is that working out for him?

… The No. 9 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted the ninth-highest away meet score in school history and captured three event titles in its 197.000-196.300 upset of the No. 7 Arkansas Razorbacks on Friday night in Fayetteville, Ark. The Huskers improved to 10-1 on the season and have now defeated two top-10 opponents on the road. …

…
“This is probably the most proud I’ve been of this team all season,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said after the meet. “We came into, I’m not going to say a hostile environment, but they had a great crowd. They’re (Arkansas) a great team and we were in a battle today. …

They host Florida March 4th. The biggest test yet. 🙂

Greg Marsden angry

You don’t see this very often. Utah coach Greg Marsden is one of the nicest people in Gymnastics.

… things didn’t go so smoothly for the Utes, who are ranked No. 1 on the floor, averaging 49.204.

Stephanie McAllister was penalized for missing an element that left her with a 9.8 start value, leaving her with just a 9.675 for a made routine.

That low score topped the frustrations for Utah coach Greg Marsden, who was given a yellow card warning minutes earlier when he walked over by the judges following several low scores.

He was still steaming at the scores after the meet. …

Normally near anything goes in Collegiate dual meets. The “show” is more important than the scores.

… Personally, I think NCAA judges bungled it this season, throwing scores too high, too early in the season.

Balance Beam Situation:

… Sure, we’ve had crazy scores over the past couple of years (we always do), but it was much more isolated to specific meets or specific locations. Now, we’re getting it so intensely all over the country to the point where Greg Marsden had to comment on the inconsistency. …

Things That Are Actually Good

That’s a great post. It includes video of TRULY great Collegiate routines. Kupets quality gymnastics!

The fifth-ranked Utes beat No. 12 Stanford 196.3-196.1 in front of 14,756 at the Huntsman Center.

GBR MAG JRs to win Europeans

To some it seems that Great Britain came out of nowhere to now be seriously considered a medal threat in Team at the London Olympics.

Not so.

They’ve won the past two Jr European Championships. And plan to win their 3rd in series in Montpellier, France.

will Florida win NCAAs?

1. Florida – 197.525
2. Georgia – 196.825

FloridaRon:

… Georgia rocks on bars. I love the half-twists and direction changes and connections. Florida fans were actually cheering the Georgia bar routines. …. Bravo to Georgia for some of the best bars work in the country.

2. Clearly, Georgia’s Achilles’ heel is floor. …

Georgia’s weakness is particularly evident competing against the Gators:

Randy Stageberg – 1/1-in, pike out
Alaina Johnson – Arabian
Marissa King – double layout
Kytra Hunter – double layout

Florida normally does the most difficulty. This year may be the same story.

Aligator Army:

… Many think that Rhonda Faehn’s gymnastics team is poised to take this year’s title and earn the program’s first-ever national championship.

I know. You’ve heard this all before. Florida’s gymnastics team is a fine top-tier program. The Gators can compete against the best programs in the nation, but just can’t seem to get over that final hump and bring a title to the Gator Nation. After all, only four different programs have won an NCAA women’s gymnastics national championship since the NCAA introduced it as a championship sport in 1982.

… It’s all there for the taking.

It’s up to the Gators to seize it.

Could Florida’s Gymnastics Team Win Its First National Championship in 2012?

Georgia has the best College training gym. Florida, perhaps, the worst in the SEC.

But that’s changing by the end of 2012. The expanded gym will feature:

… high-definition video recorders and monitors at each workout station to allow the coaches and athletes to receive instant feedback on practice routines similar to what the National Training Center features.

The new facility will also have seating and an observation deck for recruits and their parents when on recruiting visits.
