… Part of being a good coach is knowing when your athlete needs a pat on the back, or a kick in the butt. You have to find a balance between not pushing them hard enough, and pushing them too hard, and that’s different for every athlete. Being a good coach is figuring out what the athlete needs to motivate them to work hard to excel.
You can’t make them do it, they have to want to do well and succeed for themselves. The coach’s job is to help you get there and be the best. Feeling strongly encouraged to do well, and being afraid to fail, are two very different things. One makes you want to work harder, the other makes you want to run away. …
