Eddie Umphrey Interview

On Swing Big:

A: My official title is Team Coach at Twin City Twisters. I currently coach L7-elite. I do mostly UB and V, but jump in if needed anywhere. Mike, Rich and I share the spotting duties around the gym.

Q: How would you describe your coaching philosophy and how has it changed from when you started?

Gymnastics is a blessed gift. When people ask me what I do for a living I tell them I’m in the business of saving lives and building champions. I love winning in the gym, but gymnastics is much more than that. I don’t feel that there is any other sport that challenges someone physically, mentally and emotionally like gymnastics can. …

Everyone’s goal is to win gold, but not everyone will be an Olympic champion, an NCAA gymnast or even a L10 athlete. A medal is great, but did you learn along the way? That is the real truth behind the madness. …

Great coach. Great philosophy.

when judges fear to watch

You try not to watch warm-ups because there’s no point in premature scrutiny, but the signs are unavoidable: flat approach. Oh-so-slow repulsion off the table. Heavily taped feet. The coach heaving over a stack of mats and flipping the girl, who lands on her knees.

Your ankles are already cringing.

The scary Tsuk is frighteningly ubiquitous at any given Level 8 meet, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. “Let’s go!” the coach yells, clapping, and the teammates chime in. …

Olympic Qualification 2020?

FIG is looking at changing how gymnasts will qualify to the 2020 Olympics. The NEW system will come into effect January 1, 2017.

What is the NEW system?

We don’t know.

80 delegates met for 2 days in October. Five national federations presented proposals on how Artistic qualification might be changed.

FIG Executive Committee will look at options in November. A final decision is expected to be made by FIG Council which will take the decision in May 2015.

Grandi stated that the current World Cup system is going badly. He wants to reform the competition calendar so that continental championships and World Cup should “both ultimately lead to Olympic participation“.

In that same interview he ponders the possibility of reducing the number of team members from five to four gymnasts. He does not mention the possibility of reducing the number of teams, instead.

We wait and wonder.
