ACL Rehab Protocols

Jessica Savona is expert, having recovered from two anterior cruciate ligament tears in her career. She said the second was easier, having learned how best to do it during the first.

2010 World Champion Aliya Moustafina is back, but not yet with the level of confidence that she showed pre-injury.

Now Peng Peng Lee is in the process, getting her knee back for College gymnastics.

The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy just released an issue specifically focusing on the knee. One of the main themes was ligament rehabilitation. They posted some grim statistics from a recent meta-analysis that only 63% of ACL repairs continue on to their pre-injury level of function and that only 44% of these athletes go on to become competitive again. They also quote that the odds of reinjuring the same knee or the opposite knee after surgery range from 3% to 49%. …

Sounds grim.

… On the other hand, ultra-fit and young Artistic gymnasts are far outside norms when it comes to rehabilitation. If they are motivated, they can be back close to 100% within a year.

Rebecca Tunney – Bars 14.600

Rebecca Tunney has come along way since the American Cup earlier this year where she had a disastrous competition.

At Great Britain’s second Olympic Trial, Tunney topped the board again, performing consistently and well.

She won the All Around competition at the recent GBR v Finland v Spain friendly competition last weekend, scoring a 14.600 on bars in the team / AA competition. …

sport ethics – Meghan Vogel

Meghan Vogel doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

Vogel, a junior runner for West Liberty-Salem High School (West Liberty, Ohio), won the 1,600-meter title Saturday at the Division III girls state meet at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus. But it’s what she did in her next race that was most remarkable.

With about 20 meters to go in the 3,200, Arden McMath, a sophomore from Arlington High School, collapsed in front of Vogel. Rather than run by her, Vogel helped McMath to her feet and carried her across the finish line, making sure to keep McMath ahead of her.

“Any girl on the track would have done the same for me,” Vogel said Monday. …

compulsories teach basics

No matter how many times Bruno Grandi insists that quality of gymnastics is paramount, fact is that highest start scores win the medals.

… but how did we get to this state of affairs?

Three main reasons, I postulate:

open-ended Code encourages more and more difficult routines
easier for judges to rank top routines
• fewer “compulsories” world-wide

Do you have compulsory routines where you coach?

Though Edouard Iarov has moved on — to WOGA — the developmental program he put in place as Canada’s Men’s National Coach is still working.

We have a big base of good young guys in the “Argo” program doing “compulsories“. It’s still the best way to reward “basics”.

Here’s a sample Horizontal Bar routine.
