ZHOU Shixiong

We’ve not seen much of the new generation of Chinese men. I’m impressed so far. Zhou Shixiong, for one, is a fantastic gymnast.

15.666 P Bars!

Super clean twisting Vault.

And not too shabby on Pommels.

Sadly, he does the boring Chinese style H Bar. Jaegers. Rybalkos. Everything that could and should be devalued.

However … prelims have been going LOUSY for the Russian men. There’s going to be Hell to pay back in Moscow. 😦

Yamilet Peña – Prudnova

This YouTube clip from podium training #WChAntwerp you can change to 720p and slow down to 25% speed.

Though far better than the Egyptian girl, the landing is very dangerous.

It’s the responsibility of FIG WTC to enforce their own rules. So far with this gymnast, this skill, they’ve been encouraging this quality of performance.

Yamilet Peña is a fantastic athlete. I don’t blame her or her coach. Only the “rules”.

Renmore Gymnastics, Galway Ireland

One of my favourite clubs in the world is Renmore. They are passionate. And organized.

Renmore trained in a set-up, take-down facility until moving to a dedicated gym in 2010. Despite a severe economic recession in most of Ireland, the club in Galway is booming.

Growth and performance have far exceeded their Strategic Sports Development Plan. By 2013 they had 750 gymnasts, a 25% increase over the previous year. And up from 150 gymnasts in 2010.

They’ve attracted coaches from United States, England, Latvia, Australia, Germany and Ireland.

Renmore is looking for a WAG elite development coach to work with their youngest talented kids. High performance is the goal.

Energy. Enthusiasm. Positive coaching style, all assets. 🙂

International candidates welcomed.

Mikulak 89.532

Sam hits 6/6 at #WChAntwerp

Chance for an AA podium finish if he can repeat this performance in the Final.

Click PLAY or watch Sam’s FX on YouTube.

I doubt he can challenge Kohei until he improves Pommels and Rings, however. 2014, perhaps.

Rings Judging?

I’m finding the scores HIGH here in the first Men’s session.

Sam Mikulak 14.70?

Click PLAY or watch Koji YAMAMURO on YouTube.

15.500 = D score : 6.60, E score : 8.90

Love the Invert to press out, though.

Here’s my favourite Ring man.

15.600 = D score : 6.60, E score : 9.00?

Balandin will try a D dismount in the Final, upping that start to 6.8.

Scores were definitely lower last cycle, when Iarov was in charge of the apparatus.

If I’m wrong, leave a comment.

Kenzo SHIRAI – triple twisting Yurchenko

It was in the 2000 Olympics that 2 ½ was named after Kyle Shewfelt, one of two gymnasts that competed it there.

13yrs later the extra half twist will be named for Kenzo.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

He should make the Vault Final. But no guarantees.

Anton FOKIN – P Bars

#WChAntwerp Men’s prelims have begun. Here’s the highest P Bar score, so far.

… (UZB), qualifications, Parallel Bars : 15.800 (D score : 6.90, E score : 8.90). …

I’m betting Kohei will be holding up 4 fingers for 4 World Championships at the end of this meet. 🙂

Gord Bennett makes history

Canadian judge Gordon Bennett believes men judging Women’s Artistic Gymnastics and vice-versa should not be considered something out of the ordinary.

ART WCh Antwerp/BEL 2013:Eyes are eyes and Gymnastics is Gymnastics,” said Gordon, who has been judging Women’s Gymnastics for more than 20 years. However, it is still worth mentioning that here in Antwerp he will become the first man to judge a women’s competition at an Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. …

Gord is a strong coach, as well.

Once upon a time there was a rule that Men could not judge women at some level of competition.

Olympics?

I assume that rule has been deleted. Otherwise we’ll need organize a petition.

Thank Meike Behrensen for the interview. 🙂
