landing ‘short’

For double somersaulting skills where gymnasts MIGHT under-rotate (e.g. Tsukahara, Yurchenko, double back, etc.) I’ll often count routines where gymnast “stand” (land on the feet) or “over-rotate”.

Over-rotating I call a “good mistake“. Under-rotating a BAD mistake. 😦

Those graphics come from Dave Tilley’s article on “anterior talocrural impingement”:

… Don’t let that term intimidate you, when broken down it’s not too bad.

“Anterior” means the front of the body, “talocrural” simply refers to the major ankle joint that allows the foot to move up and down, and “impingement” means that the joint or other tissue structures are being pushed on each other usually resulting in pain. So, pain in the front of the ankle that is felt when the bones or foot structures get pressed too hard on each other. …

Actually, you probably will be intimidated when you look at the full article. 🙂

handstand in Namibia

I’m on holiday.

Rick Handstand Namibia
Big Daddy (325m high)

There seems to be something wrong with the line of gravity in these dunes. 🙂

Just arrived Swakopmund, Namibia’s Adventure capital.

Will be dropping by the gym today. American coach Joe Softich is here right now. The club is happy to host visiting coaches if you’re planning a future Namibian holiday.

I was a bit of a doubter regarding his chances to make the Commonwealth Games team. But am slowly getting convinced Louis is serious.

Gymnastics in Mozambique

The Gymnastics federations of Zimbabwe and of Mozambique both hosted an FIG Follow-up and Monitoring Camp for the FIG Age Group Development and Competition Programme in Artistic Gymnastics on February 28 to March 2, 2014. These were the 37th and 38th Age Group training sessions that has now had the attendance of 816 different coaches from 77 countries

Thanks go to the very active President Edmundo Ribeira who attended the camp directly after arriving from Paris and left immediately afterwards to attend the FIG Gymnastics for All Symposium in the USA. Lucinda Martins did most of the advance organizational work.

Both of these three-day camps focused primarily on practical work in the gymnasium with coaches and their gymnasts on the various technical and physical tests, the compulsory exercises and the modified optional rules. …

The kids are natural athletes. Coaches are keen. But a lack of training equipment has stalled development of the sport since some years ago when East German coaches first arrived.

Leave a comment if you have any suggestions on how to get gymnastics equipment to Africa.

Trampoline history

LEIGH HENNESSY ROBSON:

Uploaded to the YouTube account of Samuel Castro is a video called “Trampoline Best Legends.” It’s been making the rounds on social media networks. There are many outstanding performances on the video, including clips of trampoline gymnasts at Cirque and on the winter slopes. I don’t know where he got all the clips and I’m not sure who all the performers are or where they are performing. However, I did bear witness to a few of the performances in person.

Galimbatoviski is the most talented gymnast you probably never heard of. At minute 2:25 is a clip of him performing an historic record-breaking routine, the first competition routine with 5 triples in a row, and the first with a rudi-out triffis. He performed two of them: rudi-out triff tuck, 1/2 in rudi-out triff tuck, triff pike, 1/2 in triff tuck, triff tuck – solid, on an ancient 1/4? bed. …

I did not witness Canada’s Jason Burnett perform his world-record DD routine of 17.7 in a 2007 World Cup, but his routine is included in this compilation of Trampoline greats at 5:30.
