Beam dismounts montage

I saw this new edit linked from International Gymnast on Facebook.

As a coach, I like the Gainer dismounts best. Fear the double front dismounts most.

1-arm handstand

Jim on Beast Skills posts detailed tutorials on extreme strength.

He traveled to the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts to get help with his 1-arm handstand from coach Lin Junming.

He mostly discusses hand positions, especially what I’ve always called “Chinese fingers”.

Going for Gold

Catalina Ponor’s comeback

The blogs are buzzing with the news that multiple Olympic gold medalist Catalina Ponor is officially making a comeback. Again. At age-23.

Click PLAY or watch a Romanian TV clip on YouTube. She looks to be in pretty good shape.

I’m skeptical. Much as I’d love to see another colourful elder gymnast on the world scene, I agree with Stoi!:

… can Romania really afford another gymnast that can’t swing bars?

They’d be far better off with some new Bars specialist.

judging Katelyn Ohashi’s Beam

@intlgymnast linked to some routines broken down by difficulty.

As a sample, here’s that amazing Beam routine from a few weeks ago.

what happened to China?

Jet lag?

Not prepared for these unimportant meets?

Both the Chinese men’s and the women’s teams had bad meets in Canada this past weekend. And the women’s team included World silver medalist Jiang Yuyuan.

Click PLAY or watch her Floor on YouTube.

… not her usual effervescent self.

There are more videos from both Wild Rose and Shewfelt on the GymnCA YouTube channel. Thanks Jenn!

Wild Rose and Kyle Shewfelt

In a nation infamous for boring, slow gymnastics competitions, we now have two in the same region – Alberta, Canada – garnering high praise.

If these two meets were hosted back-to-back weekends, it would be a nice trip to do both, training between the meets. (And possibly sneaking off to Banff for some Spring skiing, too.)

In fact, these two competitions were originally scheduled back-to-back weekends, but a venue problem forced the Edmonton meet to change dates.

Wild Rose has a horrible website, but most everything else is first class. It offers only Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.

The best write-up on Wild Rose was posted by Couch Gymnast. The highlight past 2 years has been the chance to compete against CHINA.

Sabrina Gill and the Chinese gymnasts

The Kyle Shewfelt Gymnastics Festival is a totally different concept. Kyle started modestly this year with only about 500 participants, but plans to grow this event HUGE, adding more acrobatic sports. Kyle wants as many kids as possible to enjoy the fun and excitement of a major event.

The best write up on Shewfelt was posted by Amanda Turner on International Gymnast.

Competition dates are not confirmed, as yet, for these two meets in 2012. But consider one or both for your competition calendar.

The rest of the competitions in Canada, aside from Gymnix, need step up to compete with the innovation and attention to detail offered in Alberta.

Ask your kids what meet they liked best this season?

World’s Best Tricks IV

Amanda Turner and International Gymnast on Facebook linked to this, the most recent in a series.

The most dangerous tricking and acrobatics compilation I’ve seen. ( Artistic gymnasts are the safest athletes included.)
