Scottish Championships

Gymnastics Planet:

Daniel Keatings chose to show a couple of new routines at the 2012 Scottish Championships at the weekend. His Pommel Horse and Parallel Bars should make people sit up and take notice. Unfortunately it seems he fell trying a new release combination on High Bar …

1 Pommels 15.900 – Daniel Keatings (Huntingdon)
1 P Bars 15.650 – Daniel Keatings (Huntingdon)
1 H Bar 13.850 – Daniel Keatings (Huntingdon)

Recall that Dan played it “safe” at the London Test Meet, competing first on each apparatus to get the Team off to a good start.

… The 2012 Championships took place on the 18th and 19th February in Bells sports centre, Perth …

Paul Karnjenko (City of Glasgow GC) won the U12 title with a score of 65.800, 7 points clear of second place.

The U14 title was won by Auchterarder’s Thomas Cameron and the U16 by City of Newcastle’s Jamie Carpenter.

There were only two competitors in the junior event with Finlay Clarke of Hinkley narrowly beating James Griffin (West Lothian Artistic) to first place.

The senior all around title went to Tom Barnes (Rushmoor) who scored 73.500 AA, with a particularly high floor score of 13.450. The Dave Scollon Memorial trophy was awarded to West Lothian Artistic’s Lucas Thomson for displaying the greatest degree of artistry throughout the competition.

In the WA event Emily Ford of Perth was awarded the espoir trophy with a score of 41.50.

City of Glasgow’s Cara Kennedy won the junior championships title, scoring 46.383.

The 2012 Senior Championships title went to City of Glasgow’s Amy Regan for the third consecutive year with a score of 48.00. …

MA National Coach Jim Holt said “I think the men did a great job at the 2012 Scottish National Championships. We’ve been working to change the culture of men’s gymnastics in Scotland, and it is clear that the squad is buying into our positive and success-oriented approach. There were a few mistakes of course, but mistakes for the “right reasons.” Most if not all the breaks were a result of gymnast’s putting in new and more difficult skills. The guys remembered to pay attention to “presenting”, and fought hard to stick landings. I am very proud of ‘my guys’, and am looking forward to making a statement at British Championships in June.” …

I actually agree with Miss Val. Achilles seems to be near unpreventable for powerful, older gymnasts. College girls are more at risk than Elite, I’d say.

One bit of good news … Sydney Sawa is in great shape and hopes to be back in 2 weeks.

Ron Galimore – the gymnast

As a big fan of DaVanche (Ron) Galimore, the gymnast, back in the day, I was happy to see this retrospective feature appear, posted by one of his former teams:

Iowa State gymnast Ron Galimore took his sport by storm en route to becoming one of the greatest gymnasts of all-time. The Cyclone also blazed a trail to where no African-American had gone before after coming to the Iowa State campus in the fall of 1980. …

Ed Gagnier was Galimore’s coach at Iowa State. During the three years Gagnier coached Ron, he viewed him as the most explosive gymnast he had ever seen or had the opportunity to coach.

“Ron was a fit gymnast,” Gagnier said. “For starters, he had the muscular structure that no one else did, the unique ability to be able to explode in his performances. He seemed to be ahead of everybody else. He was so spectacular and could achieve such great height in his moves. It made him stand out.”

While at Iowa State, Galimore enjoyed unprecedented success. Perhaps his most notable achievement was scoring a perfect 10 on the vault at the 1981 NCAA Championships. This feat marked the first time in NCAA history any athlete had reached the perfect plateau. Galimore did it in his final collegiate vault, which made it more remarkable. …

Black History Month: Ron Galimore

Bruce Davis:

Among my favorite memories of Ron were his sky high double backs performed on crude mats in 90 degree heat at Miami Central HS during JO training sessions. He made the other black kids who were in the gym playing basketball, eyes pop, when he performed his floor exercise routine.

Ron was also an expert on trampoline. I remember him bouncing at my private gym with 20’ high ceiling beams. He would go up and catch the steel beam with his hands and hang and attract my attention by kicking and laughing. Pretty soon he had worked out a ten bounce routine after each beam grab executing a different trick every time he returned to the trampoline. …

Ivan Zubkevych – advanced planche

Ivan Zubkevych is a circus acrobat most recently performing in Germany and Switzerland.

He’s got some planche variations I’ve never seen before.

I’ve always considered Paul O’Neill the strongest planche man I’ve ever seen. But Ivan is up there with the best.

Who else could contend for the greatest planche all-time?

Just a few days after this workout was filmed, senior Randii Wyrick achieved her goal of qualifying to the 2012 Nastia Liukin Cup with an amazing all around score of 38.60. Wyrick is the reigning JO National Champion on vault and has signed to compete for LSU next season. ‘do try this at home’

Ceiling Stand = using banister for support, raise legs into the air and place both feet on the ceiling. Lock into position, keeping body vertical.

That’s just one of the classic moves on House Gymnastics. 🙂
