A tribute.

I love the music, originally the score for the wonderful film Bless the Beasts and Children (1971). It was nominated for both an Academy Award and Grammy.

There were many “perfect 10s” in international competition before those Olympics, actually. But that’s when the perfect 10 gained the attention of a worldwide TV audience.

wheels for Russia?

The Fierce Five will be financially rewarded for their Gold Team medal in London. No worries.

What about Team Russia?

Gymnast #391 reports:

… The silver that Afanasyeva won with her teammates got her a brand new Audi A7 Sportback car worth 2 million 390 thousand rubles, roughly around $75,000 USD. …

I expect the girls will do very, very well in Putin’s Russia.

China still top Olympic nation

Full Twist, out of Ireland, did a terrific job covering the Olympics. Read her wrap-up post. Major highlights.

Though not nearly as dominant as in Beijing 4yrs ago, China is still the nation to beat.

They did much better than I anticipated.

greatest runner you’ve never heard of

They say David Rudisha is ‘the greatest runner you’ve never heard of’. That is the line that has been rolled out by the headline writers at the BBC, Vanity Fair and a few others in recent weeks. You know him now. Rudisha, the greatest 800m runner in history, broke his own world record at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday night. …

If you did not know Rudisha, it is only because he keeps such a low profile. There were no histrionics on the startline, and no exuberant celebrations at the finish. …

… To come here and get a world record is unbelievable. I had no doubt about winning. …

Rudisha pulled the field around behind him, like a speedboat leading seven water-skiers. …

Though I’m one of the few defending the maximum 2 medals / nation rule, I must admit … this is pretty cool. 🙂

why McKayla didn’t 10

McKayla’s E Score was a 9.733. That means that the judges were split on whether to give her a 9.8 or 9.7.

2 of the deductions were clear :

Her legs were separated here…

Yang Hak-seon parents live in a tent

I never saw so much attention given to parents at any previous Olympics.

Especially the Raismans. But also Jordyn Wieber’s parents. And even Beth Tweddle’s folks.

How about our Gold Medal Vault champion?

A construction company on Tuesday promised an apartment to gymnast Yang Hak-seon, who endured gruelling poverty and won Korea’s first gymnastics gold medal at the London Summer Olympics on Tuesday.

Yang told reporters in London that he would like to buy a house for his parents using the money he would receive as rewards from the government and sport organizations.

“After hearing that Yang’s family have a difficult life in a makeshift house, the company decided to give him an apartment as a present,” an SM Group spokesman said.

The apartment complex in Gwangju is being built and is expected to open by the end of next year. The apartment is valued at around W200 million (177,000 U.S. dollars). …

USA are amateurs

Watch BELA shout at Mihai to inquire about Aly’s BB score. …

I was stunned to see that Team USA does not have scripted routines in hand, just-in-case they are needed for an appeal.

Who’s responsible Kathy Kelly? … This is embarrassing.

It reminds me of amateur hour 1996 when Team USA was unaware that Kerri Strug need not Vault to “mathematically clinch the gold”, despite what Wikipedia says.

UPDATE from Irene:

Mihai said in an interview that he had the form filled out and ready to go just in case, but it was in his bag, on the other side of the area. He was concerned about the time, so he opted to fill out another one, rather than retrieve his bag.

One FIG judge concludes that the front somersault must have been petitioned, given a D for “tuck” and petitioned to “E” for pike. Arguable.

Aly did originally get credit for Split Half … also debatable.
