When I was a young coach in the 1970s, Boris Verkhovsky happened to immigrate to my city. In fact, his family moved in just a few blocks from my house in Calgary.
Introduced by a Tumbling Master of Sport from the Soviet Union, it wasn’t long before Power Tumbling was an important part of the Gymnastics scene in Alberta.
Boris organized us to construct the first “ski” floors. Springy, but incredibly narrow.
I love Trampoline and Tumbling, especially Power Tumbling. It’s an ideal compliment to an Artistic Gymnastics Club.
Here’s a runway extension we added to our tumbling trampoline a few years ago.
The sport has changed a lot since I was a trampolinist.

In 2013 I’m seeing a trend to grow the sport. 🙂

Trampoline will make its debut appearance at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George BC in February 2015. As part of the lead up to the Games, funding has been provided by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation to help develop the athletes and coaches in the next two years.
The first event is being hosted by the Grande Prairie Gymniks … Long time Provincial and National Team coach, Brett MacAulay, will be travelling up to Grande Prairie for a Coaches Clinic to 10 local coaches, introducing them to the sport of competitive trampoline.
If interested in growing T&T in your club, be sure to follow Trampoline Pundit.

Tamayo is an F-part (0.6) — double layout Arabian. Named for the great Charlie Tamayo … who did not compete it often. I couldn’t find a routine on YouTube.
Everyone’s raving about Stacey Ervin’s at Winter Cup.

Here’s Kieran Behan training a good one. (VIDEO)
Here’s Kyle Shewfelt training it.

Kyle trained it into punch front 1/1, as well.
… On the other hand, that’s the skill where Kyle broke both legs and did ligament damage. At 2007 World Championships podium training. The landing is blind and dangerous.
As Jessica O’Beirne pointed out in the most recent episode of GymCastic, Winter Cup AA Champ Jake Dalton mounts with double layout half out, not Tamayo.

That’s a great trick too. But it’s only a D-part (0.4) — and it’s in the same box as double layout, so you can’t compete both elements in the same routine.
In these cases, it’s clear. But there are going to be variations where it’s very difficult to tell the difference.
If I was Steve Butcher, I’d propose both be valued as E-parts. Both be considered the same skill.
One of the most interesting interviews so far, 2004 Olympic Floor Champ Kyle Shewfelt.
In this episode, Kyle chatted with Uncle Tim about the Winter Cup; then told us what it felt like to compete in the mythical “zone,” how to party at the Olympics, what it felt like to break both legs at once, about his FIG proposal to bring men’s gymnastics back to its artistic roots, gives tips on combating homophobia and bullying of gymnasts, and how to put on an innovative fun meet that creates memories for kids and their parents. Yes, we said parents!
Listen on GymCastic
Kyle’s competition is March 14-17, 2013 at the University of Calgary.
Host Canada will take on the USA.

Leave a comment if you’ve got a list of the Canadians. As usual, it’s not easy to find on Gymnastics Canada online. So far I see no improvement in communication in the new quadrennial.

I represented Tumbl Trak at the big annual Invitational in Phoenix.
Amongst the hundreds of competitors were 3 teams from Canada, escaping the Great White North.
Tumbl Trak provided volunteer t-shirts for Classic Rock and the upcoming Regional Qualifier, both hosted by Arizona Sunrays.
An added highlight, 200 competitors competed Trampoline and Tumbling.
