Thank you to former Olympic Champion, Mr. Rustam Sharipov for visiting Gymnastics Mississauga and sharing a wealth of information and experience with our MAG athletes!
Rustam attended Nationals, recruiting for the Ohio State Buckeyes. He’s Head Coach.
When I reminded him of his performance showing 8 or more Tkachevs in series, in the good old days, he told us an interesting anecdote.
Rustam actually had problems learning Tkachev. Two men’s coaches could barely throw him over the Bar.
Finally he tried it on the women’s rail, and had immediate success.
A big success story for the Dominican Republic is 2012 Olympian Yamilet Peña Abreu.
But gymnastics in that tiny nation has a troubled history.
The training equipment has not been well maintained.
Gymnasia Latina is now reporting (Spanish) that her coach, Frank Susana, stopped working due to insufficient salary.
Edwin Rodriguez, president of the Dominican Federation of Gymnastics:
“We do not have that amount of money required, we are a federation poor, but we know he deserves it. We will appeal to the Minister (Jaime David Fernandez) to see if we get a coach. It is difficult to get a good one, try to keep up, but could not, “Rodriguez said. …
Peña is still hoping to compete at Worlds in Belgium this October.

On a Stalder Rybalko one hand slipped. He fell, landing hard on the red safety edge matting.
Mats of this width were only introduced at Canadian Championships two years ago.
Formerly they were only as wide as the support standards.
Thank Gymnova for bringing such wide landing mats.
Curse FIG MTC for not devaluing Rybalko this Code. It’s obvious that those elements are overused, poorly executed and very dangerous. 😦

While researching pit blocks to order for our gym, one company sent us a sample of their white cubes. Good thing we ended up buying the dark blue ones…
