tumbling – “skimming the stone”

For “tempo” tumbling (e.g backward handspring series) we often use the analogy that the tumbler should be like a stone skipping across the lake.

Gerald S George posted an article on that topic adapted from his book Championship Gymnastics.

You can read the article for free via the online version of International Gymnast magazine.

Brandon Wynn – Rings

I don’t recall Brandon ever looking better than at Championships 2013.

He’s got an excellent shot at qualifying for the Ring final at Worlds.

Love the mount.

Can he medal?

Angles and time held could be slightly improved.

The best of the best in Antwerp will pull up out of more strength holds like Aleksandr Balandin.

Some — van Gelder, I’m looking at you — risk falling on dismount. As Balandin did there.

Since this is an individual worlds, some smaller nations may put up a Ring specialist we don’t know.

This apparatus is difficult to predict.

Smart Moves online lesson plans

One of the best products I saw at U.S. Congress was demonstrated to me by Mike Fitzgerald from New Zealand.

His company — Smart Moves — offers a platform where any sport, any organization, any club can create a database of lesson plans.

Click PLAY or watch how it works on YouTube. (5min)

Everything is stored in the cloud. Everything can be viewed from any browser: tablets, smart phones, Mac, PC, etc.

Pretty slick.

Very customizable.

You can add images and videos.

Jeff Lulla, for example, has already put together a video series of Gymnastics drills for Smart Moves.

Click PLAY or watch a sample on YouTube.

Videos are easily linked to lessons.

If you might be interested, watch another more detailed video on how it works – Smart Planner (quick start videos combined)

Cost for most people is between US$29 – $99 / month.

Contact Smart Moves with more questions. Or sign up for a free 10 day trial.

Clubs and organizations are jumping on this RIGHT NOW. 🙂

Smart Moves assumes you will be printing the lesson plans week-to-week.

In the future, instead, we’ll wirelessly display the lessons on monitors around the Gym using something like Google Chromecast ($35 / monitor).

Leave a comment if you’ve tried Smart Moves.

remember the name – Donnell Whittenburg

The U.S.A. has a lot of depth. One of the most intriguing up-and-coming talents is Donnell Whittenburg out of Ultimate Gymnastics Inc. in Baltimore.

He recently moved to the U.S. Olympic Training Center to focus on Gymnastics full-time.

Donny’s got plenty of potential on Floor and Vault.

Here he is finishing 7th on Vault in Senior at Championships 2013.

Click PLAY or watch Vault 1 on YouTube.

Click PLAY or watch Vault 2 on YouTube.

How about that physique?

In a hall full of muscle men, he looks the most ripped. Despite his youth, Donnell is already pulling out of strength holds. And competing double double layout!

Click PLAY or watch his Rings on YouTube. (6th)

Sure. Another good American AA who is weak on Pommels.

Nope.

Pommels is his favourite apparatus. He’s got potential.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

I’m thinking Donnell will already be a candidate for Worlds 2014.

Ontario moving to J.O.

Dave Brubaker:

Over 500 in attendance at the 2013 Ontario Gymnastics Congress for the Launch of the new JO program in Ontario….Sue Arkell was an incredible clinician and gave a lot of amazing information during the congress and the Training Camp.

Sue
Sue Arkell

Clinicians Steve and Sue Arkell, and Joel Skinner came up for a WAG Developmental Camp for Levels 5-9.

I’m very excited that Ontario is moving yet closer to the most successful gymnastics system in the world — the American Junior Olympic & NCAA rules.

The rest of Canada will be watching closely.

Chinese Men at Worlds

We’ve not heard much about the defending Olympic Champions.

Uncle Tim weighs in:

No matter how you present the statistics, the Chinese men have dominated the past 5 World Championships.

MAG-World-Totals-

… It looks like China will be sending a relatively inexperienced team to the World Championships.

The country’s current list consists of Zhang Hongtao, Zhou Shixiong, Lin Chaopan, You Hao, Liu Yang, and Zhang Zhongbo. Of these gymnasts, Zhang Hongtao has the most international experience, having won gold on pommel horse in 2009. …
