Biles, Maroney, Ross AA

Brenna Dowell is alternate. Will not compete.

Worlds 2013 USA

details – Biles, Maroney, Ross will compete in the all-around at 2013 World Gymnastics Championships

Breanna is a terrific alternate. If any of the 3 AAs get injured, she could step in instantly.

I believe they hoped Brenna could stabilize her Bars in time. Hoped she could qualify to the Bar final. That’s not going to happen now.

Downside?

Mckayla is not nearly as prepared for Bars and Beam as she’d like to be. It’s not critical that she compete those here. But for 2014 Worlds and beyond, Marta doesn’t want to carry a specialist — if possible.

The official word from Marta:

“We have decided that Kyla Ross will be in the First Subdivision, Simone Biles in Third and McKayla Maroney in the fourth subdivision – they will (each) go on all four events,” Karolyi told us. “McKayla picked up the preparations very well and she showed much better consistency on those two events, so we felt that she definitely could be a contender in the All-Around scene and that’s why we decided this way.”

Hong Su Jong & Hong Un-Jong

Hong Un Jong (born March 9, 1989 ?? in Hamgyong, North Korea) is a North Korean artistic gymnast. She is the 2008 Olympics gold medalist in Vault.

Watch her Amanar from FISU 2013 on Gymnastike.

It looked about the same today at #WChAntwerp Podium training.

Update. Here’s the best one from today. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

On the other hand, she landed only 2 of 6 attempts. And trained no second vault.

Inside Gymnastics heard that here at Worlds she had submitted for triple twisting Yurchenko.

That looks pretty unlikely to me. Unless she throws one in the Vault final.

Seems to me this family is famous enough already.

Hong Su Jong … is the 2007 World silver medalist on the vault. She competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the all-around and in the team event.

She is the older sister or possibly twin sister of Hong Un Jong. …

Hong was suspended for two years, from late 2007 to late 2009, following a positive test for furosemide at the Good Luck Beijing pre-Olympic test event. …

North Korea was banned from taking part in the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, as the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique announced it was not satisfied with the explanation provided by North Korea for having entered Hong Su Jong with three different birth dates (1985, 1986 or 1989), in different competitions. In particular, she had taken part in the 2004 Olympics claiming to have been born in 1985; her subsequently announced birth date of 1989 meant that she would have been too young to compete in 2004. …

Kyla Ross podium training

The star of the 1st official podium training session at Worlds.

For #WChAntwerp Champion 2013, it’s going to be difficult to finish ahead of Kyla.

Moustafina could do it, but she’d better be near perfect.

Simone could do it, but she’d need a very good day.

You need to go slo mo to see errors in Kyla’s super consistent DTY.

Who else in the world today (outside the NCAA) is this solid turn after turn?

Brenna trained Vault and Bars. Did not touch the Beam that I saw. But did do a little Floor.

Steve Legendre – Floor

Hugely difficult.

Should make the Final with that. But there’s plenty of competition for the podium.

Steve’s Vault warm-up did not go nearly as well. But anything can happen on that apparatus.

You never know what Vault Kohei’s going to use.

For 2013 it’s Handspring front 2 ½ twist.

He has the highest start values of the year so far (6.4 and 6.4) according to UTRS.

Yang Hak Seon has had the highest score.

Podium – Men’s subsection 4

My first session at #WChAntwerp.

Follow LIVE @GymCoaching #WChAntwerp

Level of difficulty is HIGH.

Quality and consistency, … not so much.

Kristian Thomas looks completely healthy. Clean. Strong. Chance for a Vault medal.

Two of the top vaulters in this session (CHN, ROM) left vault with possible injuries. This apparatus is very, very dangerous right now. The FIG landing mats are simply not forgiving enough.

Pommels looked strong. Prashanth Sellathurai, Berki.

Many are wishing Orozco was competing the AA. He’d have a good chance in this reduced field.

Orozco

Watch John’s H Bar routine.

On the other hand, Rio is the big goal. After two major injuries, John should take no unnecessary chances.

Grace Chiu’s terrific photos of Sub 4 on Inside Gymnastics.

Sam could win it

Most male gymnasts do very little in podium training.

Yet Sam Mikulak was rocking full sets day 1 podium.

Click PLAY or watch his Vault on YouTube.

He says he’s out there to “have fun” and “put on a show”. But Team USA is looking forward to see what happens if Sam hits 6 for 6 in the AA finals.

He’s healthy and hitting right now.

See more U.S. podium training on the USAG YouTube channel.

Hey. Hambuchen wants to train at Michigan for a semester. To train with Sam. That’s mentioned at the end of an excellent Inside Gymnastics interview.

Fabian is the best interview in Men’s Gymnastics right now.

Thanks Catty Comments.

Men’s Podium Training

Uncle Tim put together a comprehensive post on what happened when the Men first got a chance to try the J&F equipment at the Worlds venue.
