are we overusing ice?

Editor in Chief of The Physician and Sports Medicine Journal (Dr. Nick DiNubile) once posed this question:

“Seriously, do you honestly believe that your body’s natural inflammatory response is a mistake?”

Why Ice and Anti-inflammatory Medication is NOT the Answer

Closing thoughts from the author Joshua J. Stone, MA, ATC, NASM-CPT, CES, PES, FNS:

Bottom line, ice and NSAIDs are over utilized.

I am not saying never, but I am saying ice is not a magical cure all that fixes everything and is required for healing.

… before immediately turning to ice and NSAIDs. Is it really the best option? Is it necessary for this injury at this stage?

I understand it is not the only form of treatment clinicians use, but ice certainly is the most heavily used.

Hanyang University Gymnastics cut

YangOlympic champion Yang Hak-seon, who vaulted South Korea gymnastics into the limelight by winning gold at the 2012 London Games, has flipped out at plans by Hanyang University to disband its gymnastics team, fearing it could harm the sport’s growth. …

The university announced on Friday that it would drop gymnastics, judo and track and field from its sports teams in 2015 due to budget shortfalls and bribery scandals surrounding the selection of new students.

They will run only soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball and ice hockey teams leaving the 21-year-old Yang and officials of the sport aghast at the rejection. …

Yang is leading a group of past and present gymnasts who have joined forces with the Korean Gymnastic Association (KGA) in a bid to stall the university’s decision.

They have launched a nationwide petition to garner more attention from media and the public and will hold another rally at the school on Friday. …

Gymnast Flame Retardant Collaborative

An update by email from Courtney Carignan:

Dear GFRC member,

Thank you for joining the Gymnast Flame Retardant Collaborative. By joining our email list you have helped move this effort forward. Many of you are gymnast parents and coaches that had similar questions about alternatives and future studies. Below are some responses and updates:

1. We have updated the recommendations on the GFRC web page to be more specific. In addition to advising gymnasts to wash their hands after practice and before eating, we are also recommending that gyms implement hand washing policies and hang posters that encourage handwashing in the gym. We are also recommending gymnasts not participate in pit cleaning activities. One option for gyms may be to install a pit fluffer that could be used when the gym is not in use. If pit cleaning/fluffing must be done by hand, we suggest wearing a dust mask to reduce inhalation of suspended dust. …

CDN coach certification MAINTENANCE starts Jan 1, 2014

The National Coaching Certification Program in Canada has been a success since its launch in 1974. But recent revisions are making it more complicated & more expensive.

Many nations require ongoing learning to maintain coach certification — Australia, for example — and Canada plans to do the same.

It’s not going to be popular with long time certified coaches.

When do the requirements for Maintenance of Certification start?

The requirement to maintain “Certified” status through the accumulation of Professional Development points and proof of active coaching, will officially start for all sports on January 1, 2014.

Why do I need to Maintain my Certification?

Maintenance of certification, through proof of ongoing learning (Professional Development) and active coaching is viewed as essential to athlete performance and the integrity of the NCCP. The Levels-NCCP was sometimes criticized because a coach could continue to be “Certified” even if they had not coached for several years or did not keep their coaching knowledge up to date.

details – Maintenance of Certification

I have a University degree. I’ve never been required to maintain that status.

If I were running the NCCP, I’d grandfather a percentage of currently certified coaches.

Or, perhaps better, grant maintenance to those coaches who coach gymnasts of a certain level in competition.

I’m not convinced the NCCP can run this program efficiently, fairly and at a reasonable cost. The downsides outweigh the upside, as far as I can see.

former Temple gymnasts speak

Just one of example of the type of opportunity lost if Temple drops Men’s Gymnastics. If Men’s Gymnastics is dropped by the NCAA.

Temple University announced it will cut seven sports, including men’s gymnastics. Evan Burke, a former captain of the team tells what the program meant to him, and includes comments from two other gymnasts.

headshot_2_Burke_Evan … The moment I walked through the front door of the gym I was greeted not with a hello and a handshake but with a hug. “Brothers don’t shake hands, we hug,” I was told. From that moment on I was a brother. …

I was voted co-captain my senior year. They didn’t see me as a floor and vault specialist, they didn’t see me a a gay guy — they saw me as a leader. I didn’t walk through the door a leader. They made me one. …
