Hunan Gymnastics School arrests

Scandal has hit the closed world of Chinese gymnastics after at least six under-age girls were allegedly raped at one of the country’s most prestigious academies.

The director and deputy head of the Hunan Gymnastics School, dubbed the “cradle of champions” after training four Olympic medallists, have been arrested and questioned by police. …

The school’s director, 48-year-old Liu Zhiqiang, was arrested last December, according to the Legal Evening News. Zeng Rong, 52, the school’s deputy head, was detained the month before.

Both men are being investigated for sexual assault after six girls reported them to the police, according to the Oriental Morning Post. …

A reporter for the Legal Evening News was told the matter was being dealt with secretly. “The case involves minors and will have a negative impact on society so we will not release information to the public,” an unnamed policeman told the newspaper. …

Letters to Nowhere – a review

I finally managed to finish reading my review copy of the gymnastics coming-of-age romance, Letters to Nowhere by Julie Cross.

It has a 4.14 / 5 rating on Good Reads.

That’s an 8.28 / 10 … old code. 🙂

I’ve yet to come across a negative review. If you like Young Adult, this book is for you.

For example, this review by John Jacobson:

Two dead parents and a life turned upside down. Karen, lifelong gymnast with ambitions as strong as her resilience, has to try and survive after her parents are killed in a car accident one night. Her grandmother is her only real family left, yet said grandmother lives across the country. Moving across the country spells the end for Karen’s gymnastics career. Switching up coaches could mean stalled training, adjusting to yet another new coaching style, and maybe losing her chance at competing in international competition.

Karen’s coach doesn’t know her too well – he’s fairly new to the gym, replacing the old coach that left to coach college gymnastics at UCLA – but he’s willing to take her in for the year so she can complete her training without upsetting her progress. Her online schooling could continue on as usual, and Karen’s grandmother would still keep track of all of the financial and legal decisions. Her coach would simply take on the role of legal guardian for specific cases. He has no intention to infringe on Karen and become her new father; he just doesn’t want her to lose an opportunity she’s wanted for years.

Letters to Nowhere coverLiving with her coach proves to be as awkward as it is convenient. His son Jordan is a surprise, to say the least. Karen’s devotion to gymnastics has kept her out of the dating and social scene. She’s no introvert, but it’s hard to search for teenage boys to date when you’re spending a huge chunk of your time conditioning for gymnastics. …

I’m not the target audience for YA. Therefore I’ll restrict my review to the Gymnastics content of the novel.

It’s strong.

I cannot recall a TV series, film or fiction where so many of the gymnastics references are correct.

Like Brenna Dowell and Elizabeth Price, Karen (17yr-old gymnast protagonist of the novel) is struggling with whether to accept an NCAA scholarship — or stay Elite.

Like other USA elites, she fears USA Gymnastics Coordinator Nina Jones (Marta Karolyi) and National Team camps.

I believe mature female teens would enjoy the book. Don’t give it to young girls, however. It has sexual content and some profanity.

The Kindle edition is only $3.99.

Julie Cross lives in Central Illinois with her husband and three children. She’s a former gymnast, longtime gymnastics fan, coach, and former Gymnastics Program Director with the YMCA.

Worlds 2018 – Qatar?

Doha would be a fantastic choice. Qatar Gymnastics Federation President Ali Ahmed Al Hitmi would organize a superb competition.

The Gulf state is the only bidder to have been named by the sport’s world governing body for the 2018 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships – the host of which is due to be named at the FIG Council’s next meeting in Kuwait on May 9 and 10 …

“As the pioneer for several gymnastics disciplines in the Gulf region, Qatar Gymnastics has also shown efforts to promote women’s sports participation in the country,” he added. …

If Qatar does go on to win the hosting rights for the World Championships it will be just the latest in an already long list of major international sporting events due to take place in the country in the coming years.

These include the 2014 International Aquatics Federation (FINA) World Short Course Swimming Championships, the 2015 Men’s World Handball Championship, the 2016 Cycling World Road Championships and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Exclusive: Qatar is ready to host World Championships, says FIG President Grandi

The venue is superb.

OLYMPIC and world horizontal bar champion in Epke Jan Zonderland of the Netherlands will be one of the star attractions at the international gymnastics federation’s (FIG) World Challenge Cup Artistic Championships to be held at Aspire from March 26 to 28. …

Besides Zonderland, Hungary’s pommel horse specialist and Olympic champion Krisztian Berki also confirmed his participation …

gymnastics holiday southern Africa

by site editor Rick McCharles

I’ve been in South Africa, Lesotho and Namibia for past 2 months.

Fantastic.

Gymnastics is a great excuse to travel. I’m hoping to organize a gymnastics holiday in Namibia and South Africa for gymnasts, parents and coaches.

• training in Johannesburg, South Africa

• training in Swakopmund, Namibia

• big game safari to either Kruger or Etosha

• optional Skeleton Coast side trip to see the desert elephants

Etosha_National_Park,_Namibia_(2825277157)

• optional side trip to Capetown

Two weeks minimum, your trip could easily be extended.

Accommodation with gymnastics families or hotel.

Most likely this trip will be scheduled for sometime 2015 …

If interested in getting more information, contact me via this link.

If not available for that trip, … the club in beautiful Swakopmund, Namibia is looking for a visiting coach. Coaches are not paid. But they’ll cover all your expenses while visiting if you can help out.

team to beat – Oklahoma

Though the No. 1 Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team just lost to No. 4 Ohio State, they are still ranked #1 in the NCAA.

Oklahoma once again tops the Men’s National Rankings for the Week of March 17th, according to Troester.com GymInfo. Ohio State moves into second, just ahead of Stanford in third. OU leads on floor, PH, rings, and vault. Ohio State leads on PH and HB.

Individually, Stanford’s Akash Modi holds the top spot in the AA. On floor, Michigan’s Stacey Ervin takes over the lead. Ohio State’s Michael Newburger remains the leader on PH, while OU’s Michael Squires is the top ring man. Ohio State’s Jake Martin leaps into the lead on vault, while on PB, Michigan’s Syque Caesar retains his lead. Illini Jordan Valdez remains the leader on pipe. …

I’d bet on Michigan’s Sam Mikulak over Modi at Championships, however.

Danusia Francis 10.0 Beam

With MOM in the audience.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

I’m rooting for her to win the NCAA Beam title. 🙂

Getting a 10 and counting a fall in the same beam rotation. That’s our UCLA. It has been the season of the ups and downs, and that beam rotation encapsulated it perfectly–the joy of Danusia’s 10 followed immediately by the Sawa fall, brought home even more by the fact that all we could see of Val on the feed was her frustrated right hand gesticulating.

The Bruins may be able to get by through enduring the first couple routines and then letting Peszek, Francis, and Courtney save the day at the back of the lineups in the regular season, but they can’t afford days like Sunday in the postseason …

Gymnastics fashion victims
