Men’s Rope Climbing

1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles

GOLD – Raymond Bass USA
SILVER – William Galbraith USA
BRONZE – Thomas Connolly USA

The event consisted of climbing an 8-meter-high rope, and was contested on time. All competitors were given three tries, with the fastest times determining the placements.

There were only 5 competitors.

Rope Climbing was discontinued after 1932.

Peter Kormann was the first American to win an Olympic medal in the “modern” Olympics. 1976 Montreal.

It was Peter who alerted me to this USA Olympic medal sweep. We were visiting his Yellow Jackets new gym. The very first day of opening.

… As a six-year-old she developed cancer and had to have her leg amputated just two years after her mum died of the same disease.

Iona … was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a type of bone cancer – in 2008.

Her right leg was amputated below the knee as a result.

The youngster, from Jordanhill, Glasgow, loves showing off her moves to other children and their parents who are in a similar situation and contemplating what life will be like after an amputation. …

… “Everyone trains at the same time and kids with disabilities are treated like everyone else.

“Iona does floor, vault, beam and bars and this new blade is ideal for her. …

“My prosthetic leg can feel quite heavy when I’m doing sport and this blade is brilliant,” she said.

“It’s been specially designed for me to have extra support at the heel, which helps me balance when I’m on the beam. It definitely helps me be better at gymnastics.”

Thanks to our hosts at Yellow Jackets. It was great to meet club owner Peter Kormann, the 1st American gymnast to medal at the Olympics. He has some great stories from the good ol’ days.

Peter is AWESOME…….that said, Frank Kris, 1924 Gold medalist on vault is first USA medalist

I should have said Peter was the first American medalist in the “modern Olympics”. 🙂
