Australia rocks

It was confirmed that former World Champion Lauren Mitchell was out with ankle injury. The rest of the team would have to step up. And they did.

An incredible team performance raised the Aussies over Germany to the 8th and final spot in the Team Final (so far). France is yet to compete the final preliminary competition.

Congratulations to the girls and their coaches. Team Germany has far higher scoring potential, as calculated by The All Around. But it’s Team Australia going to the big dance.

GBR rocks

We were much impressed with Great Britain. Sitting 4th in team, so far, behind only USA, CHN, RUS

China prelims

#FIGWorlds2014ART prelim team

It was fun to watch the host nation at home. They are under tremendous media scrutiny.

Team China

After 9/12 preliminary sessions:

USA 235.038
CHN 230.753
RUS 228.135

Much like most pundits predicted.

China won Beam and Bars. But fell too far behind USA on Vault and especially Floor to be competitive. Floor was even weaker than anticipated. Where is Cheng Fei?

We felt badly for CHEN Siyi. She fell on the first 3 apparatus. Managed to stay on her feet on Vault.

Despite a big wobble, fan favourite Bai Yawen made the Beam final.

YAO Jinnan and BAI Yawen will make the Beam final.

YAO Jinnan and HUANG Huidan the Bars final.

YAO Jinnan and SHANG Chunsong the AA final.

Krisztian BERKI – Pommels

I’d say Keatings is the man to beat in the Pommel Final. But he must hit perfect as this guy is not going to miss this time.

Berki does the Magyar spindle properly. Some of the other guys do not complete it in 4 hand placements.

Victoria Moors

No update on Tori’s status from Team Canada.

She’s taking a break. Not injured. Undecided whether she’ll be back for Worlds 2015.

Bobby Kriangkum – Thailand

For those nations that will not qualify for the top 24 teams, this IS the Olympics. It’s great to see teams from so many developing nations. Even Angola. 🙂

Mykayla SKINNER – Vault

I’m thrilled for Mykayla, a super talented gymnast who’s suffered a lot of criticism online for lack of artistry. And for doing her Cheng vault with 1-hand.

The quality of her gymnastics has improved a lot. She hit 4/4 in prelims at Worlds. And her push on the Cheng vault is not a major problem, perhaps not even a major deduction.

Vault 1 : 15.666, Difficulty : 6.400, Execution : 8.300. Vault 2 : 15.033, Difficulty : 5.800, Execution : 9.233)

Hands are square. She touches but does not push, wrapping into the twist quickly. In full speed it’s very difficult to see.

Good chance for a vault medal.

USA got the job done. Most likely qualified the finalists they wanted. But something tells me Marta is not going to be all smiles and giggles. She will want better in the Team Final.
