Candide Thovex ski GoPro

Candide Thovex is renowned as one of the best skiers in the world and we now know what it’s like to spend five minutes in his boots. (Just without all the actual thrills of speeding down a steep slope with no end in sight, which is a good thing.)

The 32-year-old posted a GoPro video on YouTube earlier this week of him nonchalantly going off-peak, weaving through trees like an obstacle course, doing trampoline-like summersaults and all the flips and turns you could ever dream of. It’s a terrifying and mind-boggling ride.

NCAA scholarships more generous?

In landmark action for major-college sports, schools and athlete representatives from the NCAA’s five wealthiest conferences on Saturday voted 79-1 to expand what Division I schools can provide under an athletic scholarship.

The vote, taken during the NCAA’s annual convention, redefines an athletic scholarship so that it can cover not only the traditional tuition, room, board, books and fees, but also the incidental costs of attending college. That means a scholarship will now be able to pay for items including transportation and miscellaneous personal expenses.

Conservatively this means Division I men’s and women’s athletes collectively stand to gain at least $50 million a year in additional benefits.

Florida without Bridget Sloan

Not too shabby.

The Gators opened Southeastern Conference action with a win, turning in a 197.20

Florida also got a collegiate-best of 9.875 from fellow freshman Kennedy Baker on the event. On bars, junior Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto upped her collegiate best to 9.95 to take the event title. McMurtry’s collegiate bars debut was second overall at 9.925 as Florida turned in a season-high 49.525 on the event. …

On Kennedy Baker’s performance:

“Kennedy did a great job, coming in on floor for the first time. Everyone can see the tremendous potential there with her power and showmanship. There are so many great positives about her.” – Florida Head Coach Rhonda Faehn

Florida was without junior All-American Bridget Sloan (sprained right ankle) and senior Jamie Shisler (left Achilles tendon tear) as they both suffered injuries at the Gators’ opener Sunday at Ball State…depending on her recovery, Sloan could return to the Gators late in the season. …
