no hands Beam routine

Recall that Nadia has a serious wrist infection at the 1979 World Championships in Fort Worth. But still competed Beam, taking out her Handstand mount and backward handspring series.

In 2012 Sam Peszek did a routine without touching tumbling with her hands on the Beam at all. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

From the afternoon session only Stanford will be completely happy with the performance. Don’t be surprised to see the #11 seed reach the top 6. Stanford’s done this before. 🙂

Stanford
Stanford

I felt rotten for Michigan. They were great. Truly deserving of a place in the Super 6. But Stanford was magic. I’m not sure I can recall a better Bar rotation at Nationals. 49.575 with 5/6 dismounts stuck, I believe. Oklahoma went 49.500 on Bars. But I’d still call the Cardinal performance significantly better today.

The evening competition was more exciting. And more heart breaking.

LSU had 3 falls on Beam. That’s game over. 😦 What a shame.

Oklahomathe team that never falls – had 2 falls on Beam. A shocker. But had enough of a lead to get through. I don’t believe the Sooners will fall in the Final. They are certainly the team to beat. Their only weakness is tumbling. Both Alabama and LSU are much better. Brenna Dowell helps for sure. Her double front was the best single tumbling line I saw today.

I love Nebraska. But tonight Auburn was not going to be denied. I enjoyed seeing Nebraska Head Coach Dan Kendig congratulating Jeff Graba, the Auburn coach, on qualifying. Two classy guys doing a great job with their teams.

WHY are NCAAs in Texas?

For 2015 and 2016 the BIG meet will be hosted by by Texas Woman’s Gymnastics and the Knight Eady Sports Group in Fort Worth.

Why not at one of the top division 1 Universities guaranteed to draw an audience?

Here’s one reason.

“Some of the very, very best athletes that have been in the Olympics and the NCAA championships are from the state of Texas,” Oklahoma head coach K.J. Kindler said. “There’s just such a great wealth of talent there and wonderful coaching and amazing clubs …

There isn’t one Division I women’s gymnastics program in the state. Division II Texas Woman’s University houses the state’s only gymnastics program. …

Saturday, before the Super Six competitions begin, the coaches committee is hosting a reception for the state’s Division I athletic directors in an effort to increase awareness.

“We would love to see teams add in Texas,” Kindler said. “We would love to see them come out and support and check out our sport next weekend and see what all the excitement is about.”

That excitement could be tangible for the first school to commit to Division I women’s gymnastics.

There’s no hiding it. Most of these top-tier athletes from Texas if given the chance would stay in the state to compete, Georgia head coach Danna Durante said. …
