Russian Youth Championships

After two already, you probably thought Russian nationals were over, right?

As it turns out, this year’s Russian nationals were split into three competitions – the first for seniors in the Master of Sport and Candidate for Master of Sport divisions, a second for juniors in the same divisions, and a third, which happened 25-30 May, for the even younger crowd.

In Russia these are called Levels 1 and 2, for girls born 2003-2004 (Level 1) and those born 2005-2006 (Level 2).

Gymnasts in these divisions compete both compulsory routines and optional ones, with the all-around determined by the total; the event finals operate under new life rules. …

Mighty Kacy struck out

😦

Kacy Esther Catanzaro … is an American gymnast noted for being the first woman to qualify for the finals of the television sports challenge American Ninja Warrior. …

In the 2015 Houston Qualifying round Kacy failed to complete the course after falling on the cargo crossing and has to hope for a wildcard to Mount Midoriyama.

The good news?

Boyfriend Brent Steffensen got through.

And 5′ 1″ Jon Horton became the shortest man to ever scale the “Warped Wall”. He got through as well after failing to finish the course last year.

I thought QuΓ©bec did a very good job hosting Nationals this year considering they only started a few months in advance. Gymnastics Canada was very late confirming a host.

Yes there were some problems – including results – but overall it was a very good Championships.

The competition moves to Edmonton, Alberta in 2016 after three years in the Ottawa area.

best Komova interview yet

Rewriting Russian Gymnastics posted a translation of an interview by Vladimir Ivanov:

– You came back after a succession of injuries – because you are inspired by the thought of yet another Olympics?

– Not only. I’m also inspired by the thought of going to Baku.

– What was the most difficult moment during these three years?

– Each of the injuries. After the last one I thought: there is always something happening – it never ends – I’m finished with the sport. But then I realized that for me exercise is like a drug. There is nothing to do but go to the gym. I think I will not be able to give it up until I die.

– What result in Baku will be enough for your self-satisfaction?

– Gold Medal.

– So soon? In the all-around?

– Yes Yes. Probably, I will fight it out with Aliya.

– Elfimov said that you do not need to set new programmes, but just re-establish all the London ones.

– Yes. Although we do have something to add. While I will not say what it is, I hope to show new elements and connections in Baku.
