#Glasgow2015 – economic success

Best Worlds ever?

Many people think so. The mega-screen was the most important innovation. Any future Worlds that do not provide that much information to the fans is going to seem lacklustre.

Biles and Uchimura electrify

Coming into #Glasgow2015 the main story line was that Biles and Uchimura would dominate.

Biles and Uchimura did dominate. Both are favourites in the AA for Rio.

Kohei now has 6 consecutive World Championships titles and 1 Olympic title.

Simone has 3 consecutive Worlds titles.

World Rings Champion Petrounias

#Glasgow2015

1. Petrounias, Eleftherios GRE (6.8 + 9.000 = 15.800) … to Rio!
2. You Hou CHN (7.0 + 8.733 = 15.733)
3. Liu Yang (6.9 + 8.800 = 15.700)

Great final. But only 2 stuck dismounts, I believe.

I do like the final ranking. (The only prediction I’ve got correct, so far.) But all these guys are super human. It’s not easy to rank them.

4 World Bars Champions

#Glasgow2015

Yep. A four way tie.

1. Viktoria Komova RUS (6.6 + 8.766 = 15.366)
1. Fan Yilin CHN (6.9 + 8.466 = 15.366)
1. Madison Kocian USA (6.6 + 8.766 = 15.366)
1. Daria Spiridonova RUS (6.7 + 8.666 = 15.366)

Ties are not broken at Worlds. They are at the Olympics. It makes no sense to me either. 🙂

3. Kaya Kazuma JPN (6.8 + 8.7 = 16.500)

Two fantastic routines for the home fans. I like the final ranking.

Louis Smith certainly got the job done in Glasgow. Respect.

World Vault Champion Maria Paseka

#Glasgow2015

1. Maria Paseka (RUS) 15.666
2. Hong Un Jong (PRK) 15.633 to Rio! 🙂
3. Simone Biles (USA) 15.541

full results (The Longine’s result page only shows 1 vault.)

Questionable call. I felt Hong was clearly better than Paseka over the same two vaults.

It looked like Dipa from India might just medal. And qualify to the Olympics. But she had a poor landing on her 2nd Vault. (Kas + 1/1 twist)

Sadly Guilia was injured on landing. Looks like it was only a hyper-extended knee. This time.

FIG needs to change the competition mats. The one they use for Double-mini would be safer. New competition mats are too hard.

Mary-Anne Monckton knows all about these injuries. She calls for a return to the warm-up on the competition equipment just prior to competing.

World Floor Champion Kenzo Shirai

#Glasgow2015

1. Kenzo Shirai JAP (7.6 + 8.633 = 16.233)
2. Max Whitlock GBR (6.8 + 8.766 = 15.566)
3. Santana Zapata SPN (6.7 + 8.500 = 15.200) to Rio!
🙂

All hail. Without Denis Ablyazin in this final, Kenzo would have had to have fallen to lose the gold.

Kenzo

Zapata qualifies directly to the Olympic AA with that Bronze medal.

Personally I slightly preferred Deng Shudi’s routine. But am thrilled Santana will be there

redemption for Romania

It was terrific to see Larisa and Laura have a good AA Final. I’m certain Romania will qualify a full team for the Olympics at the Test Meet.

That’s important since top 3 AA at Worlds 2015 do not directly qualify a gymnast to the Rio Olympics. Neither Larisa Iordache nor Manrique Larduet have qualified. Yet. If either gets an apparatus medal in the Finals, they do qualify.

I doubt FIG ever considered the possibility that a gymnast from a non-qualifying nation might win an AA medal.

strong BBC TV ratings for Worlds

#Glasgow2015

… Barbara Slater, head of BBC Sport, represented Great Britain as a gymnast.

For the past four nights, audiences of up to 1.8 million have been tuning into BBC Two’s coverage. …

Gymnastics, it could be argued, is the ideal sport for the modern age. The bite-sized routines, which never exceed 90 seconds, are consistent with our dwindling attention spans. Yet the athletes still manage to pack in plenty of beauty and drama, not to mention physical risk. …

Perfect 10 for BBC as gymnasts help to beat cuts

As often as I question whether GBR should be naming Louis Smith to their A-team, there’s no denying he’s a superstar in the U.K. We need more gymnasts with his level of charisma if we want recognition with the general public.

I’d love to see Louis win a Pommel medal at home.
