A big success story for the Dominican Republic is 2012 Olympian Yamilet Peña Abreu.
But gymnastics in that tiny nation has a troubled history.
The training equipment has not been well maintained.
Gymnasia Latina is now reporting (Spanish) that her coach, Frank Susana, stopped working due to insufficient salary.
Edwin Rodriguez, president of the Dominican Federation of Gymnastics:
“We do not have that amount of money required, we are a federation poor, but we know he deserves it. We will appeal to the Minister (Jaime David Fernandez) to see if we get a coach. It is difficult to get a good one, try to keep up, but could not, “Rodriguez said. …
Peña is still hoping to compete at Worlds in Belgium this October.
