Cottbus day 1

In her 15th appearance in the competition, six-time Olympian Oksana Chusovitina topped the women’s vault as qualification began Thursday at the 37th Tournament of Masters in Cottbus, Germany.

The FIG World Challenge Tournament features two days of qualification, followed by two days of finals.

Chusovitina, who turns 38 this June, averaged 14.850 for her handspring layout front full and Tsukahara 1 1/2. She is once again representing Uzbekistan, but still lives and trains in Cologne with coach Shanna Polyavkova. …

The organizers chose not to use the new FIG vault scoring formula, which more heavily emphasizes execution deduction. Ironically, this cost German gymnast Pauline Schäfer a spot in the finals.
