Canadian Olympic Selection

The final OLYMPIC GAMES SELECTION PROCESS for the Canadian Team is posted. (PDF)

No later than June 2, 2012, up to 12 athletes will be invited to the Olympic Selection camp.

Some will be selected by a confusing “points system”. The rest by the Selection Working Group (SWG) composed of:

– Lise G. Simard, WAG Program Director (Chair)
– Kyna Fletcher, WAG NT Director
– Chris Baraniuk, coach and member of the WAG PC
– Hélen Laliberté, Brevet judge (World Championships and Olympic Games)
– Liz Armitage, Brevet judge (World Championships

Final Olympic Selection Camp goes June 24-29th.

The SWG is experienced and knowledgeable. I have faith they will make the best decisions possible.

My main worry is the “points system”. Last Olympics it seemed to require candidates to compete too often, risking injury. Let’s compare the number of competitions leading up to London — Canadians v American Olympians.

Leaders like Kristina and Peng Peng (who earned the team spot) should be automatically invited to Camp so they can focus on the BIG goal.

Elite Canada
goes this weekend in Mississauga, ONT.

EC results are NOT part of the Olympic selection criteria. But it will qualify gymnasts to the “High Performance” pool of athletes eligible. It’s also used to select teams to International Gymnix and Pacific Rim Championships — both of which do garner “points”.

Recall that Peng Peng won last year, her “comeback” Elite Canada.

But I don’t see her on the list of competitors. What’s happening with that?
