Why is an American Brestyan gymnast competing up north?

Talia Chiarelli was born and raised in Ottawa (1995). Her mother is Alicia Brancato, daughter of legendary Ottawa Rough Riders football coach George Brancato. Alicia gymmed and later admin’d for Nepean-Corona Gym Club, that’s where Talia started. Both mother and daughter were coached by Agnes Laing and Penny Fyfe. Talia’s dad is Peter Chiarelli, former assistant GM for the Ottawa Sens, and when he got the GM job for the Bruins in 2006, they all moved to Boston.
… got into the JO program at Brestyan’s. She became a Level 8 state champion. In 2009, when she was Level 10, she made the cut at Covergirl Classic to advance to Visa Championships as a Junior Elite. …
There’s no commitment yet to try to compete internationally for Canada, in future. But I wish she would.

Another American gymnast, Emma Sibson, finished 8th AA.
I’m not sure how Emma is Canadian. Leave a comment if you know. Like Talia, she’s most welcome in the Great White North.
Update: Emma was born in Victoria, B.C., moving to the USA when she was age-5.
