what is Olympic Day?

23 June is Olympic Day

On June 23, 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin in France began the task of reviving the Olympic Games.

He set up a committee in charge of organising the first Games and beginning the modern international Olympic Movement. The first modern Games were fixed for Athens in 1896 and the International Olympic Committee was officially created.

Best known is the Olympic Day Run.

Nastia celebrated Olympic Day with media at one of the WOGA gyms. As always, she was asked about the 2012 Olympics:

… “I feel like I still have potential in me. I’m learning some new skills.

“As long as I enjoy it, and my body feels OK, then why not?”

The first step, though, is competing again. Not coincidentally, that will occur during the 2009 Visa U.S. Championships Aug. 12-15 at American Airlines Center.

Assuming Liukin then qualifies for the World Championships in October in London, she can set the American record for world medals won. Liukin is currently tied with Shannon Miller at nine. …

While Liukin’s return to competition in August is the headline, she’s not the only Dallas-area gymnast to watch – even from her own gym. Ivana Hong, an alternate for the Beijing Games, now trains here under Valeri Liukin, Nastia’s father and coach. Rebecca Bross, the 2007 junior national champion who also trains under Valeri, is healed from knee surgery and could also make noise in her first senior national championship.

Single-session tickets went on sale Tuesday (1-800-745-3000 or http://www.tickemaster.com) and range from $10 to $80. All-session tickets are $95-$350.
