… The marketing side of me says, “YAY! I support the effort!” It could possibly bring more attention to the sport of trampoline, increasing visibility and interest. You can never have too much attention.
Then, there’s the artist in me. She says, “Do you really want to place rules and parameters on such freedom of movement?” …
That quote’s from Trampoline Pundit linking to a NY Times article on the idea being pushed by some at the Quebec Circus School:
… “The ultimate goal is to have wall trampoline be in the X Games,” said Julien Roberge …
… Roberge, who trains with members of Canada’s Olympic trampoline team and is considered one of the country’s top bouncers, acknowledges that there must be an organized way to judge an event. He and his fellow trampolinist Ignacio Adarve have written criteria for judges to use to assign points to moves and tricks. In a typical contest, bouncers will perform a series of 10 consecutive tricks, each following a bounce on the trampoline. The highest marks will go to those who perform the most difficult acrobatics. …

I’m not against the idea either. But Wall Tramp is many years away from getting into the X Games, if ever.
Trampowall first gained popular attention at Cirque’s La Nouba in Orlando.

I’d rank Rick Mercer the #1 comedian on Canadian TV.
And he’s a gamer. He asked Karen Cockburn, Rosie MacLennan and Jason Burnett to teach him some Olympic Trampoline.
… I don’t think it went all that well.

I’ll post video when that bit gets televised.

Gymnastics fans are in for a treat this year, with the 2012 MG, WG, RG, TRP & ACR National Championships all combined into one massive event at Sydney Olympic Park.
Having qualified a full team at the 2011 Artistic World Championships, Australia will look to select a full women’s team to compete at the Games. …

Prof. Bruno Grandi:
… “I am pleased that our gymnasts now have a second chance at participation in the Games, an initiative that aims to bring greater justice to the sport. But as with all new concepts, we will need to revisit certain criteria, details, that some feel are still too complicated. …”
… the Finals in Artistic and Trampoline enjoyed spectacular audience success from a media standpoint. “This is the first time that the FIG has independently produced the signal of a Final. We have chosen to embrace a modern philosophy by live broadcasting on our “Gymnastics” You Tube channel. We have integrated social networks into our global communication package, which has proven very successful. …
I’d agree. Overall the event was excellent, especially for the YouTube Finals feed and videos.
Dwight Normile was more critical of the new system:
… The biggest losers were the Canadian men and Spanish women, both of whom would have qualified under the old rules with their 12th-place finishes in Tokyo.
It would make a lot more sense to use the test event specifically for individual qualification. And if the FIG really wants to raise the level of competition at the Olympics, then it should reduce the number of all-around berths and add more top specialists via the previous worlds apparatus finals. …
I’d say the least happy

One of the Chinese coaches complained about the O2 venue calling the colour scheme “depressing“.
Ws van Wijk pulled up images of the Beijing Test Meet. And the venue once dressed for Olympics.

Seems it’s normal procedure to save the final decorating for the BIG event.
Hopefully they’ll upgrade the couch, as well.

International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) executive member Brian Stocks loves the O2 arena, venue for the London Olympics.
But a Chinese coach at Test Meet complained about the red GYMNOVA matting and the depressing colour scheme. It is inferior to Beijing and Athens, but I wouldn’t call it depressing.
I heard a rumour that GYMNOVA is considering replacing the red mats with a darker colour. That would be a shame.
Photographer Eileen Langsley:
… Whilst some improvements have been made since the 02 Arena staged the 2009 World Championships, there has been a real decline in the standard of the lighting. …
Not only was there a low level of light but there were some very strange colour casts – possibly the result of the running down of the lamps as they age. They are due to be replaced for the Olympics but it was a pity that the new ones weren’t in place for this event. …

HE Wenna from China is defending Olympic Trampoline Champion. She had the highest “flight time” (time in the air) of all competitors at the Test Meet, despite being more petite than most.
At the very END of her Finals routine she unexpectedly flew off the Tramp! CONGRATULATIONS and THANKS to the two spotters who jumped to the rescue.

The coach said she had a couple of very minor injuries from that incident. She’ll be looking for redemption in the same arena come July!
Here’s the FIG wrap-up on Women’s Tramp.
Thanks Shani.
